Cyber Week at BHHS

by Mr Michael Oaten, Assistant Principal

In Week 10, our school held a whole-school focus on cyber safety and digital awareness.

This included student presentations from the Cyber Safety Project for Years 7 and 8, and Cyber Safety Solutions for Years 9, 10, and 11. A seminar for parents and carers was also delivered by Cyber Safety Solutions on Tuesday 23 June.

For students, the sessions addressed key topics, practical tips, and important advice to help them stay safe online. The parent/carer seminar focused on raising awareness of the risks associated with unmonitored online activity, while also offering practical strategies to support families in educating their children and creating safer, more supportive online environments at home.

Cyber Safety Solutions highlighted the following key tips for parents and carers when supporting children online:

  • GET: Keep devices out of bedrooms and bathrooms.

  • RULES: Establish a family agreement and clear rules for device use, both for schoolwork and socialising.

  • KNOW: Be aware of your child’s passwords and passcodes.

  • TALK: Start conversations early and maintain regular open communication.

  • FILTERING: Use filters to restrict access to inappropriate content.

  • SCREEN TIME: Monitor what your child is doing online.

  • BE THERE: Take an active interest in the apps and platforms they use.

  • USE: Make full use of security settings and parental controls.

  • FRIEND: Encourage adding only people your child knows in real life.

  • LOCATION: Stay aware of your child’s online activities and interactions.
