Winners! ResourceSmart Schools Award
by Ms Amy Longden
After the hard work of a dedicated team of students and the wonderful leadership of our Sustainability Coordinator, Ms Bec Kertes and her support team of Ms Deanna Chesterton and Ms Amy Longden, Box Hill High School took home the award!
We were thrilled to be nominated (and win!) alongside many other schools across Victoria for a ResourceSmart Schools Award, a Sustainability Victoria initiative that rewards primary and secondary schools for their efforts in improving sustainable environmental practices.

Our category was Curriculum Leadership School of the Year (Secondary) and recognises the BHHS Sustainability Club’s work to document where sustainability is taught and practiced across different subjects in the school.
We value our environment and believe that teaching and guiding students to develop sustainable practices for the future is critical for our society.
Four student members and two staff attended the award ceremony at the MCG on Thursday 11 June and it was so inspiring to walk around the expo and visit stalls set up by incredible schools across Victoria, showing what they currently do.
Projects ranged from reducing waste at the canteen, recycling plastics, reducing electricity usage, fundraising through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme and increasing biodiversity through creating green spaces on campus.
The award comes with a grant for our Sustainability Club and we look forward to using this to further BHHS’s progress towards becoming a 5-Star ResourceSmart School!

On the Friday 5 June, Box Hill High School also celebrated World Environment Day by holding a bake sale full of vegan goodies, creating a sustaina-tree artwork, face-painting, trash-ketball, and having a free dress day where students were encouraged to wear second-hand clothing and brought a gold-coin donation.
We managed to raise $700 which will be put towards more projects around our school.
Our CDS (Can Deposit Scheme) has collected more than $500 worth of cans using our yellow bins spread throughout our school which allows students to easily put their cans or bottles into our collection bins for us to collect – if you or your families have cans to donate, you can search for Box Hill High School at the donation drop-offs!
Thanks for your support!
