On 29 April, we were delighted to welcome a representative from Deakin University, along with a Deakin University alumnus, to present to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students interested in Allied Health careers.

The presentation provided students with valuable insights into the wide range of study and career opportunities available within the Allied Health sector. Students learned about various university pathways, course options, and the steps required to achieve their career goals.

The presenters also shared their own experiences, helping students gain a better understanding of what it is like to study and work in the health industry.

One of the highlights of the session was exploring the many different Allied Health professions and understanding how each role contributes to supporting the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Students were surprised by the diversity of careers available and gained a greater appreciation of the skills and qualifications required for different pathways.

The presentation was both informative and engaging, with students actively participating throughout the session. Many students took the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and seek advice about future study options and career planning.

We would like to thank Deakin University and our guest presenter for sharing their knowledge and experiences, and for inspiring our students to explore the exciting opportunities available in Allied Health.

Next term we welcome Monash University.

Year 11 students attended the Victorian Careers Expo on 14 May at the Melbourne Showgrounds. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore a wide range of future pathways, including university courses, TAFE programs, apprenticeships, traineeships, and careers in the emergency services.

Students engaged with exhibitors, collected valuable information, and gained insights into the many options available after school. Many returned inspired by new possibilities and with a clearer understanding of the steps needed to achieve their goals.

It was especially rewarding to see so many students visit the Careers Office afterwards to discuss their interests, explore pathways further, and begin setting vocational goals for their future.

Connection Day - Connect to Self, Connect to Learning, Connect to Future

This year, our Year 10 students participated in Connection Day, an exciting new initiative at BHHS designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their learning, and their future aspirations.

The day provided students with the opportunity to reflect on their personal and academic growth while setting meaningful goals for the future.

A key feature of the program was a one-on-one meeting with a Student Individual Pathway Mentor. During these sessions, students discussed their current academic progress, reflected on their achievements and challenges, and explored pathway options for VCE and beyond. Together, students and mentors identified goals and strategies to support future success.

Students also completed their annual Career Action Plan, helping them to think about their interests, strengths, and possible career pathways. In addition, they participated in Virtual Work Experience activities, allowing them to explore a variety of industries and gain valuable insights into different occupations and workplace expectations.

The day included team-building activities that encouraged collaboration, communication, and connection with peers. Overall, Connection Day was a valuable opportunity for students to engage in self-reflection, strengthen their learning goals, and begin planning confidently for their future pathways.

We look forward to building on the success of this initiative in the years to come.

Work Experience

This year, many of our Year 10 students participated in Work Experience, with a large number successfully securing placements across a diverse range of industries and professions.

Students had the opportunity to explore careers in fields such as dentistry, law, logistics, healthcare, and many more, with placements including organisations such as Lindsey Fox and Eastern Health.

Prior to commencing their placements, students completed the required Safe@Work modules to ensure they were prepared for the expectations and responsibilities of the workplace. This training provided students with valuable knowledge about workplace health and safety, helping them to make the most of their experience.

Work Experience provides students with an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand insight into occupations that interest them and to experience the realities of the workplace.

Through observing professionals, developing workplace skills, and engaging in day-to-day tasks, students were able to build confidence, expand their understanding of different career pathways, and make informed decisions about their future goals.

We are grateful to all the employers who generously hosted our students and provided such meaningful learning opportunities. Their support plays a vital role in helping young people explore career options and develop the skills and knowledge needed for future success.

Students that were unable to secure a placement this term will have the opportunity to participate in the program in November. Please refer to the information on Teams or call in and speak to the Career Team for further information.

Interview Skills and Mock Interviews

Year 10 students recently participated in an Interview Skills Workshop and Mock Interview Program designed to prepare them for future employment opportunities. Throughout the workshop, students learned how to write effective job applications, develop professional resumes, and present themselves confidently during interviews.

A highlight of the day was a live stage skit performed by staff, showcasing both effective and ineffective interview techniques. The engaging performance provided students with practical examples of what employers look for and common mistakes to avoid.

Thank you to all teachers who participated and helped make the experience both educational and enjoyable for our students and thank you to students for your engagement and participation!

We are looking forward to supporting all Year 12 students through the VTAC application process and Pathway Planning sessions next term!

The Careers Team wish families a happy and safe term break!
