The World Beyond the Classroom

There is something wonderful about excursions: the opportunity to see the world beyond the classroom. At the very least, it is a change of scene for both students and teachers, and best it is an opportunity to make new discoveries or see ideas from the classroom operating in the real world. And for all the teachers’ best intentions, for many students their highlight of the day will be the laugh they had on the train and what they ate in the food court.
As an arts teacher having my students experience physical objects, building and artworks is so much more rewarding than pixels on a screen. It is for this reason that I organised an excursion to Top Designs at the Melbourne Museum for Year 10 APD and Year 11 & 12 VCD.
Media and Drama students also had a similar experience to see the best of 2025 Year 12 student performances. Students in Art Making and Exhibiting go one better. The content of AME excursions, specifically visits to a range of galleries, will appear on the exam.
Teachers are always very impressed with the behaviour of our students when out on an excursion, which is both a credit to our school and their families.
And when everything goes to plan, it is usually a lovely day out for both students and teachers. But don’t be thinking that it is easier to have a day out, than to stay at school. For every excursion that a teacher organises there is a long list of things that need to be done to ensure its success.
Here are a selection of photos from Arts excursions this year.
