Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Through the lens....
We have continued to look at our English unit through a history lens, focussing on how school has changed in the last 100 years. Comparing different aspects of school, including classrooms, school expectations, book work, lunch food and games, and technology, we investigated similarities and differences between school in 1926 and today in 2026. We completed research using multimedia resources, such as articles, books, and pictures. With those different resources we focussed on summarising key information and finding main ideas.
Writing
We used all our research to follow our writing process for several different writing pieces. The Grade 2s planned, drafted, edited and revised, and published both an information piece and a persuasive text. In our persuasive writing they answered the question: Would you rather go to school now or in the past? Ask your child this at home and see how persuasive they can be!
Maths
We have had a busy two weeks in maths. We continued and finished our unit on addition and subtraction, learning several important strategies for solving these kinds of problems. These strategies include: counting on, counting up, finding tidy 10s, jumping on a number line, and splitting the numbers into place values before adding or subtracting. We then used these strategies while solving number sentences and word problems, following our UPSC (understand, plan, solve, check) routine and utilising bar models to visualise and plan our problem solving. Finally, we explored money and implementing our different addition and subtraction strategies to find change.
On top of English and maths, we have had a great time in our other learning areas too.
In Gardening, we are creating bug safe houses using jars. Our Year 2s are practicing their typing and learning online cyber safety skills in technology. In wellbeing we have continued to look at how big feelings affect us, and explored different strategies that can help us regulate when we are having those big emotions. We created strategy stars that outline preferred strategies. Wall sits, wall push-ups, breathing techniques, and mindful coloring seem to be popular choices. Have a go with these at home too! Our Year 2s have also been enjoying buddies with the Year 4s, who have been sharing some of their writing and favourite games with us.
Well done all and we are looking forward to another two weeks.
