It has been another exciting and productive fortnight in Year 3! 

Students have continued to show curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm across all areas of their learning.

Reading

We explored Aboriginal Dreaming stories and learned that these important stories can explain the natural world, share cultural knowledge and teach valuable lessons. Students practised visualising scenes, interpreting unfamiliar vocabulary and identifying the deeper messages within stories. As part of our Book Week learning, we have also begun examining traditional fairytales. Students identified common features such as heroes and villains, magical events, chronological structures and happy endings. They have also considered characters’ traits and motivations.

Writing

Students created short stories featuring Australian native animals and an important lesson for the reader. They planned their characters, developed a problem or mistake and wrote a resolution showing what the character learned. Students have now begun planning their own fairytales, thinking carefully about the motivations of their main characters and villains.

Maths

Our focus has been time and duration. Students have used calendars to interpret dates and solve problems involving days, months, years and seasons. They have also explored the relationships between seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks, and practised converting between these units. Students are developing their ability to read analogue and digital clocks and use their knowledge of fractions to understand quarter-hours and half-hours.

Humanities

Students continued learning about the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have with Country. They explored how Traditional Owners have cared for the Country sustainably for thousands of years and considered how this knowledge can help us care for the environment today. Students also examined how the seasons can be understood through changes in plants, animals, weather and the natural environment.

Our Year 3 students have also continued to enjoy their cooking lessons. Over the past fortnight, they worked together to prepare a delicious minestrone soup and made chips using potatoes and leafy greens. These lessons provided students with opportunities to practise following recipes, preparing ingredients safely, working cooperatively and trying a variety of nutritious foods. It was wonderful to see their confidence in the kitchen continuing to grow!

We would also like to thank all the families who attended our Year 3 assembly last week. The students were very excited to share their learning and achievements with you, and it was wonderful to see so many family members there supporting them. Your presence helped make the occasion especially memorable.

We are very proud of the effort, creativity and thoughtful participation our Year 3 students have demonstrated throughout Weeks 4 and 5. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next!
