From Kimalee Fernandes and Georgie Murphy, Junior School Science teachers
Research has found that building background knowledge in Science improves students’ overall reading comprehension (2023 E. Ross, Harvard Graduate School of Education). At NMPS the Science team strives to make Science accessible and exciting to all of our students. Here’s what’s been happening in the Science Labs:
Prep - ‘On The Move’
This week our Preps have been experimenting with different types of balls and how they bounce, as well as investigating the contact forces ‘push’ and ‘pull’. Our students are becoming very good at following instructions and recording their answers when experimenting.

Year 1 - ‘Light & Sound’
Our Year 1 students have completed their studies on the ear and sound by analysing vibrations with tuning forks, sounds, music and playing with homemade instruments. Has your family made instruments at home before? They have now started learning about different sources of light - both natural and artificial.

Year 2 - ‘Push & Pull’
This week our Grade 2 students have been going deeper with the contact forces ‘push’ and ‘pull’, making marble runs and puppets that move.
