This will be the final Art Newsletter from the Senior Campus for Term 3, as I will be taking leave for the remainder of the term. Art Club will resume in Term 4 when I return.

POP… Art!

Year 5 students have been putting the finishing touches on their embossed Pop Art inspired artworks. Like the original Pop artists, students were encouraged to capture the current times, choosing objects, ideas and images that are relevant to their generation and everyday lives. After creating raised designs in foil, students chose how they wanted to add colour, experimenting with ink markers and paint pens to create either a matt or shiny finish. They then mounted their finished artworks onto board and designed their own pop-out embellishments to decorate the frames.Throughout the final stage students were thinking like artists, carefully considering cohesion and balance to make sure their artwork and frame worked together as a complete piece. 

The Real Houses of North Melbourne 

After spending weeks carefully sketching, etching and preparing their foam printing plates, Year 6 students learned how to use a foam roller and acrylic paint to create their prints. Through trial and error they developed their printing techniques, learning to apply the right amount of paint, use the right amount of pressure when rubbing their prints and carefully aim and position their paper. Printmaking takes patience and students quickly discovered that it can take multiple attempts to achieve a successful print. This project required grit, patience and dedication and the results speak for themselves.

Each print has its own distinctive character. Some prints feature precise, controlled linework, while others embrace fluid contours, expressive mark making and reimagined forms. As an exciting part of this project, some students have created an extra print that will be up for grabs at our school fete in Term 4. Keep an eye out for these special pieces!

Stitch and Tell

Year 3 and 4 students have been busy finishing their textile artworks on hessian, creating pieces that capture a special memory, interest or something meaningful about themselves. Over the past six weeks, students have developed their sewing skills from beginner techniques to confidently creating neat and precise stitches. They have learned how to design simple patterns, cut their own fabric patches and carefully attach them to their work. Students have shown wonderful resilience and perseverance throughout the process, learning that mistakes are a natural part of making art. To complete their artworks students added ink markers inside their stitched shapes.

Art Club students have continued creating signs for our school garden project, helping to celebrate and protect our local environment. Grade 3 student Hana also led an Art Club activity on drawing birds, sharing her skills and enthusiasm with other students. This ties in with the next stage of our garden project where students will create signs featuring local birds and animals found around our school grounds.
