Biz -E -Kidz Update

From Libby Hanna, Coordinator

Guling season sunny times

Over the last couple of weeks we have been welcoming in the Wurundjeri season of Guling (orchid). Have you noticed that it is feeling much less wintery lately, with days getting longer and no more breathing steam like a dragon on cold mornings outside at before school care?

Waring season lasts from mid-April until July, with Guling season occurring only for August. We spend so much time outside at Biz-E-Kidz, interacting with our environment -

Our big gum trees (gumnuts are the established currency of Biz-E-Kidz),

Our local native animals: the albino ring-tailed possum, the mum and baby brush-tailed possums, the crested pigeons whose crest feathers cause the strange sound when they fly, and the family of Currawongs who are like shy magpies with yellow eyes.

At Juniors last week, the brushtail possum was awake and in a low tree hollow so children could see it. Ada, Robbie and Eloise acted as custodians to make sure that nearby children knew the possum was there and awake, and to remind children to be respectful and careful of the possum and its need for sleep.

Inside, children have been building on their interest in beyblades by creating them from card with the help of templates (also known as spinning tops!) and from Lego, as children used to do years ago.

Our Program Planning team have been exploring week-long themes for the program, in order to deeply explore topics of children’s interests. This week we are going deep on animals, last week we visited the different continents with Biz-E-Kidz passports, exploring children’s cultural backgrounds.

To everyone coming to our Pupil-Free Day Program next week, we look forward to seeing you there - to those who aren’t, we wish you a great long weekend next week.
