Myths & Meaning

This term, Year 8 English students have been exploring the fascinating world of myths through their unit, Monsters Who Made the World. The focus of this unit was to examine how different cultures used mythical creatures and traditional stories to explain natural phenomena before the development of modern science. 

After studying myths such as 'The Rainbow Serpent' and 'The Giant’s Causeway', students investigated narrative structure, characterisation, along with vivid description and figurative language. They then brought their learning to life through a range of creative activities, including designing wanted posters for the legendary giants Finn MacCool and Benandonner. Students also worked collaboratively to invent and pitch original myths explaining how rivers came to exist - complete with mythical creatures, supernatural powers and meaningful lessons for humanity. 

These activities have allowed students to strengthen their comprehension, creative writing and speaking skills while discovering the important role that storytelling plays across cultures.
