Igniting Curiosity for National Science Week

Get ready to launch into a week of discovery! Week 5 marks the arrival of National Science Week, and Camden High School is celebrating with an absolute blockbuster lineup of activities. 

 

To kick off the festivities, we have organised a special visit from Starr’s Planetarium. Our Year 8 students will participate in an immersive, 360-degree dome production that brings the cosmic mysteries of deep space straight into our school gym. Beyond the Stars, the entire week will feature a dynamic array of lunchtime and classroom programs designed to spark creativity, an engineering mindset, and technical skills.

 

Students from all cohorts can try their hand at parachute engineering, competitive LEGO structural challenges, and interactive physics-based assemblies. Keep an eye on the daily notices so you don’t miss a single spark!

Charting the Future at the STEM Careers Expo 

- Year 7G & 8G

 

On Wednesday 5th August, select student cohorts from Year 7G and 8G took a proactive step toward mapping their academic and professional futures by attending the STEM Careers Expo. This interactive event successfully bridged the gap between classroom theoretical science and thriving modern industries. 

 

Our students engaged directly with industry leaders, engineers, data scientists, and environmental researchers. Through hands-on demonstrations and career profiling games, they discovered how a strong foundation in high school science pathways opens doors to high-demand careers in automation, renewable energy, and biotechnology.

 

Through interactive displays and hands-on activities, students had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals, develop new skills and discover how STEM can lead to a wide variety of future careers.

A Stellar Science Partnership: 

Camden High and Cawdor Public School 

 

Late last term, the Camden High School Science Faculty had the immense pleasure of visiting Cawdor Public School to deliver an engaging, practical lesson cantered on the Solar System and the mechanics of space travel. This exciting community collaboration gave Cawdor students an entirely hands-on opportunity to explore the wonders of our universe, successfully sparking an early curiosity and enthusiasm for high school-level science. 

 

Adding immensely to the quality of the experience, former-Camden High student Louisa joined the visit. Louisa is currently completing her tertiary Teaching degree and recently finished a highly successful practicum placement with us. Both Camden High and Cawdor Public deeply appreciated her expert assistance in coordinating and delivering the rocket and planetary stations. This enduring partnership highlights the unbreakable connection between Camden High School and our local community schools, fostering peer learning and collaborative growth across all age groups. We look forward to expanding this valuable primary network in future terms! 

 

 

Junior Science Insights: 

Chemistry, Materials, and Reactions 

Our middle-school cohorts have dived straight into rigorous laboratory experiments and industrial science modules to start the term: 

  • Year 10 Experiments: In the opening weeks of Term 3, Year 10 stepped directly into the chemistry labs to execute advanced practical investigations into the behaviour of acids, bases, and salts. Students mastered neutralisation reactions, measured precise pH indicators, and examined safe chemical handling protocols.

  • Year 9 Materials Unit: Simultaneously, Year 9 has launched into a brand new unit focused on materials science, metallurgy, and the global mining sector. Students are learning how raw mineral ores are extracted from the Earth and chemically refined into everyday products. This module heavily incorporates structural fluency in the Chemical Periodic Table, teaching students to predict element properties, bonding patterns, and reactivity trends based on atomic structures.

Year 11 Biological Diversity Day   

 

Our Year 11 Biology students recently attended the Biological Diversity Day at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan. Students participated in engaging workshops led by experts from Taronga Zoo, the Australian Museum and the Australian Botanic Garden. The day provided a fantastic opportunity to explore biodiversity, conservation and ecosystem management while connecting classroom learning with real-world science.

Year 11 Biology Camp

Our Year 11 Biology students just got back from camp at Wooglemai Environmental Education Centre, where they took part in hands-on fieldwork and explored biological concepts beyond the classroom.

 

Students investigated local ecosystems, collected and analysed data, and developed their practical scientific skills while experiencing the natural environment firsthand. It was a fantastic opportunity to build their knowledge, work collaboratively and bring their Biology studies to life!

 

Mrs Bromley and Miss Loader are really proud of how great our kids are! We had such a wonderful time.

Propelled Forward at the University of Sydney

 - Year 12 Physics

 

To consolidate their intensive academic journey, our senior Year 12 Physics students recently attended the prestigious Physics Kickstart Excursion hosted at the University of Sydney. This high-impact academic experience immersed students directly in university-level laboratory facilities. 

 

Our seniors conducted sophisticated, hands-on experiments and observed advanced demonstrations specifically engineered to deepen their conceptual mastery of high-stakes HSC Physics syllabus dot points. Beyond analysing complex data, it was a fantastic opportunity to see real-world applications of theoretical mechanics and electromagnetism, building immense confidence in our students as they head into their final HSC examination preparation phase.
