Mathematics News

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,
As we move through the second half of Term 3, we wanted to share an update on the topics your child will be covering in Mathematics over the coming weeks, and to give you advance notice of important assessment dates.
Our Assessment Task 3 (Examinations) will take place in Week 9 for students in Years 7-10.
Please note the following examination structure:
Years 7–9: The examination will assess topics covered from the last assessment task up to Week 9 of this term.
Year 10: This is the Yearly Examination, which will assess all topics studied throughout the year.
Year 12: Students are currently engaged in their Trial HSC Examination period and HSC preparation. A separate communication regarding their final program has been distributed.
Year 7 - Topics to Week 9
Since their last examination, Year 7 have been working through:
Angle Relationships (concluding Term 2)
Algebraic Techniques 1 - simplifying expressions, substitution and solving simple equations
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages - operating with rational numbers and applying them in context
Assessment focus: Topics taught since the Term 2 examination (Length and Area) through to Week 9.
Year 8 - Topics to Week 9
Since their last examination, Year 8 have covered:
Length & Area Review (concluding Term 2)
Volume - prisms, cylinders and composite solids
Probability - calculating probabilities, complementary events and experimental vs theoretical probability
Indices - index laws and applying them to simplify expressions
Assessment focus: Topics taught since the Term 2 examination (Pythagoras and Linear Relationships) through to Week 9.
Year 9 - Topics to Week 9
Since their last examination, Year 9 have been studying:
Trigonometry A & B - right-angled triangle trigonometry and applications
Area and Surface Area A - area of composite shapes and surface area of prisms and cylinders
Linear Relationships A & B - gradient, intercepts, graphing and modelling linear functions
Volume A - volume of prisms, cylinders and related composite solids
Assessment focus: Topics taught since the Term 2 examination (Probability and Equations) through to Week 9.
Year 10 - Topics to Week 9
Year 10 are preparing for their Yearly Examination, which will be a comprehensive assessment of all work covered in 2026.
Over the remaining weeks they will complete:
Probability B (Pathway)
Indices C (Surds) - simplifying, operating with and rationalising surds
Area and Surface Area B (Pathway)
Revision - structured review of all core and pathway topics from Terms 1–3 in preparation for the Yearly Examination
Assessment focus: All outcomes from the Year 10 course.
Year 11 & 12
Year 11 are in the final stages of their Preliminary courses, consolidating Functions, the Binomial Theorem and Graphical Relationships ahead of their Formal Written Examination in Weeks 9-10.
Year 12 students are currently sitting their Trial HSC Examinations and will move immediately into final HSC examination preparation. We wish them every success.
Important Reminder: Assessment Notifications
Assessment Notifications for Task 3 (Week 9) will be distributed next week.
These notifications will contain detailed information regarding:
The specific outcomes being assessed
The format and conditions of the examination
Equipment requirements and preparation advice
Please review these notifications with your child and contact their classroom teacher if you have any questions.
How You Can Support at Home
Encourage your child to maintain a regular mathematics study routine. Even 20–30 minutes of practice each evening makes a significant difference.
Ensure they are revising from their exercise books, summary sheets and past assessment feedback.
Check that they have a working scientific calculator, ruler, and geometry set for class and for the examination.
We are confident that with consistent effort over the next few weeks, all students will be well prepared for their upcoming assessments.
Kind regards,
The Mathematics Faculty
