WSU Pathways to Dreaming - Year 7 and 8
It was my absolute pleasure to take a group of our First Nations students in Years 7 and 8 to this year’s On Campus Day at Western Sydney University as part of the Pathways to Dreaming program.
This program is designed to introduce young people to the possibility of university study by familiarising them with the incredible facilities, student mentors and wide range of study options on offer, while instilling a sense of what is possible when they set their minds to it.
Our students participated in a range of hands-on workshops across Engineering, AI and Mathematics, led by university lecturers and current students in the Aspire program. They also explored Health Sciences, where they checked pulses and tested nerve function and reflexes with the Podiatry team.
The day concluded with an incredible cultural session led by Rhett, who shared a powerful ceremony passed down to him by his Elders. The atmosphere during this session was deeply moving as he spoke about the importance of purpose, connection to Country and belonging. Our students were incredibly respectful and engaged, taking on board his teachings and wisdom.
It was a fantastic day of learning, culture and inspiration, and a valuable opportunity for our students to broaden their horizons and imagine the pathways available to them in the future.
NAIDOC Week Celebrations
In Week 1 of Term 3, Camden High School proudly held its annual NAIDOC Week celebrations, a special time to recognise and honour the rich culture and history of First Nations peoples. Our week was filled with engaging activities, including daily art sessions, mindfulness exercises, and games in the library. The library showcased a fantastic display featuring works by First Nations authors and captivating young adult fiction.
A highlight of the week was the opportunity to collaborate with Dharawal artist Michael Fardon. Our students had a unique experience working alongside Michael, witnessing his creative process and learning about his passion for his art. Michael praised the students for their respect and teamwork throughout this major project. We eagerly look forward to unveiling the new Welcome Artwork later in the term.
The celebrations concluded with a whole-school BBQ, where students cooked and enjoyed tasty kangaroo sausages - a delicious introduction to traditional bush food with a modern twist. Students who participated in the week’s activities also entered a lucky prize draw, with prizes sourced from ethical Indigenous businesses including hair scrunchies, pens, notebooks, and drink bottles. These gifts encourage our school community to celebrate First Nations culture every day, beyond NAIDOC Week.
We are proud of the meaningful engagement our students showed and look forward to continuing these important celebrations in the future.
