Skills First Funding for 2026 Year 12 Students in 2027

As Year 12 students begin planning their pathways beyond school, we encourage students to explore VET qualification in 2027 and explore the Victorian Government's Skills First funding program.

The good news is that many students may be eligible for Skills First funding, which can significantly reduce, and in some cases fully cover, the cost of their training. 

Skills First is a Victorian Government initiative that provides access to government-subsidised vocational education and training (VET) courses in areas of workforce demand.

Who may be eligible?

To be eligible for Skills First funding, students generally must:

• Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen. 

• Be living in Victoria (or an approved border region) while undertaking their training and assessment. 

• Meet any course eligibility requirements set by their training provider. 

There are also limits on the number of Skills First-subsidised courses a student can undertake at one time or commence within a year. 

Eligible students holding a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, or Veteran Gold Card may qualify for further fee concessions. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students may also be eligible for tuition fee waivers through Skills First.
