Senior Boys AFL State Championships

On Tuesday 18th August the Senior Boys AFL Team made their way down to Elgar Park, Box Hill to compete in the AFL State Quarter-Final. 

The Senior Boys were up against a stacked Lowanna College team which featured multiple State and Talent League players; However, this didn’t concern the boys one bit which was evident in their positive attitude the way they played. 

Although nerves where high right before the bounce, skipper Baxter Alcock delivered a fiery rev up priming them to win the first centre clearance and start the game strong.

As quarter time rolled around Lowanna had jumped out to a 20-point lead, nothing the boys couldn't recover from. A strong quarter time address by coaches Horner & Burleigh saw the boys once again ready and firing leading to contests being hit harder than ever, strong gut running and an amazing showcase of skills from all our boys.

Through this immense effort we were able to narrow the deficit to just 3 points by half time, to which the boys played out a strong second half but just weren't able to overcome Lowanna’s refined style of footy the end scores being:

Lowanna - 16.8.104

Wantirna - 6.5.41

Lowanna went on to win the State Grand Final by over 100 points, giving Wantirna an honorary 3rd place finish across the entire state, what an achievement! No doubt with a few more trainings under our belt we would have been able to win that match!

Huge congratulations to the boys for making it as far as you did, one of the best runs in recent Wantirna history. A massive thank you to the players, coaches and all those who assisted on the day. Good luck next year!
