What is Visual Storytelling? Part 2 

Visual storytelling is the practice of communicating a message, idea, or narrative through visual elements such as objects, symbols, composition, and materials, rather than relying only on text or spoken words. At its core, visual storytelling brings together two key elements: story and visuals.

The following Photogram examples provide insights into how everyday objects can communicate hidden meanings, personal experiences, emotions, and themes. Students have created artworks through carefully selected objects and arrangement to tell a story. 

The accompanying excerpts provide further context inviting the audience to understand, connect with, and engage with each artwork through shared experiences and emotions.

As you view each example, consider: What story is being told? What might the objects symbolise? What hidden meanings can you uncover?

Pulpo Cookie’s game description says ”Pulpo Cookie may gaze upon the world with eyes devoid of  emotion, but the moment something catches her fancy, she swiftly wraps it up in colourful ribbons to keep it close by forever. 

While some might see it as an adorable penchant for collecting… those in the know are well aware of her record.  

As a Grade B time criminal, Pulpo Cookie is ill-famed for stealing a full seven hundred years of time, which were carefully woven into her lovely mobile hanging in her chambers. 

Eventually apprehended by SCOOP, Pulpo Cookie may be quiet and expressionless, but her tentacle-shaped haircing are rumoured to be able to sense every approaching presence and even probe beyond space itself. Perhaps that is why nothing in the world can ever take Pulpo Cookie by surprise.” ~ Clover Harwood

My artwork symbolizes how a fracture can cause someone to withdraw, often creating a barrier between themselves and others. ~ Maree Jose 

My photogram tells the story of two people who meet and slowly fall in love. Cupid's arrow shows when they first meet and fall in love. The heart shows them falling deep in love. The angel wings show how happy and safe they feel together. Then, they have an argument and go through a rough patch, shown by the teardrop. After being apart, they realise how much they mean to each other. The two rings represent them getting back together and getting married. ~ Venice Johnson

The collection of objects represents the essential elements of a dog’s life, including exercise, play, training and care. They demonstrate how these everyday items support a dog's physical and emotional wellbeing while encouraging positive interactions with people and the environment. ~ Ronelle Brennan
