Year 6 News

From Ben F, Year 6 Teacher
Winter Gala Sports
Last week about a third of the year 6 cohort braved the chilly weather to take part in the Winter Gala Interschool Sport Series. NMPS fronted up with teams for the following sports: AFL, Netball and T-Ball. Here is a rundown from various students who took part in each sport.
Gala day footy - Girls
By Charlotte and Ellie 6A
The bus pulled up and tension was running until we saw the ovals. We’re not really sure that you can call them ovals due to the small size but they were what we had to work with. We were all snacking on lollies and struggling to get changed into our gear. Ben suddenly said “Quick, grab your stuff our game is in ten minutes”. We were all in a mad scramble to get to the right oval in time and nerves were kicking in. We were eager to see how we would do. We finally settled in on a park bench when we looked around and saw the opposing team on another oval, 200 metres away. We grabbed all our stuff and trekked over there only to find out we were right and had to walk back. Pretty eventful so far but we’ve got more to tell.
We huddled up and captain Ellie started talking. The lineup was, backline: Catherine, Chloe and Hanna. Midfield: Ellie, Angie and Harper. Forwards: Charlotte, Sienna and Olivia. The perfect position. The whistle blew and the ball went flying to the other end. The other team’s best players had soon scored 2 goals. We were losing. It was half time and we needed to lift. The second half began and we had the ball. Charlotte scored a cracking goal and our spirits lifted. Soon another goal and then another. We were winning. Then the other team’s best players scored three points. We were really nervous because if they got a goal they would be in the lead. With three minutes to go NMPS scored a final point and the whistle signalling the end of the game blew. We were waiting for the results of the game after we had just shaken Saint Margaret’s hands. Ben finally announced the scores. 15-19 our way. We were ecstatic. Everyone jumped up and down and we all screamed. This was not expected.
We won 2 out of our 5 games that day and were super happy with how we played. Everyone on the team gave it their all and we had an amazing day.
Gala Day footy - Boys
By Teddy & Monty 6F
When the bell rang at the start of school, most of us were getting ready for class, but not us. We and all the other students representing the school at inter-school sports were preparing for our gala day activities. The boys football team consisted of Aleron, Anton, Daniel, Jacob, Kinoah, Mohamed, Matthew, Monty, Paddy, Teddy & Wilco. We were playing footy and our first game was scheduled at 10 against Moonee Ponds West. It was a successful game, winning by 25 points. We then had a bye, before playing St Mary’s. It was a tough game, losing by 6 goals. Recovering quickly, we then played a team in blue and yellow winning by 35 points. Continuing the role, we then won our next game against Ascot Vale winning convincingly 96 - 2. To round off the day we played Holy Rosary and won by 60 points. After a successful day out we headed back to school on the bus. Overall we had a blast.
Gala Day - T-Ball
By Melanie 6F
Our hearts thumped as the opposing team approached us. ‘You’re going down!’ They said with confidence. Little did they know what was coming for them…
Hitting 7 home runs, we easily won the round. The other team watched in despair as we batted the ball across the field, running across base 1, 2, 3… home run! We celebrated with a candy salad and other various snacks. Our chances of making it to finals shined like the sun! All in all, last Thursday was a fun day where we played T-ball, learned to work together in the coolest of ways, celebrating our wins, and just enjoying being there. I super excited for this Thursday when we return, no matter the results!

We arrived there our hearts beat fast as we where scared most of us had not to much skill. We were not sure of the others teams skill. Our hearts drop as we play the second team. They looked rough looked as if they where gonna eat us alive. Our hearts beat as we field we did good catching and running after the balls, we used a trick hand signals to try tricking the other team. They dint mean anything but they helped. We did 7 home runs ! Our hearts filled with joy as we think we might have made a spot in finals we hoped. No matter what it was all fun and we are proud of our selfs for doing good !
Gala Day: Mixed Netball
By Inaaya 6F
When we arrived at Fairbairn Park, the same familiar feeling from last term, filled the already buzzing atmosphere. We arrived pretty early and the footy kids got right to it. Netball on the other hand… did decide to stack on the sugar. Don’t know where that got us. Netball Girls started us off, playing well. Our game, on the other hand did unfortunately delay, leaving us to playing only 2 matches. Our first game was challenging, as it was obvious that the opposition had team members that played netball outside of school. In the end, NMPS took a terrible defeat, by nil. We also faced other difficulties, like twisted ankles and teared muscles, (that was me). But with great pep talks, by Hailey, we were back on our feet. Our next game went slightly better, with a magnificent hoop by Cooper. But it wasn’t enough. The opposition had very skilled players and did beat us to dust, knocking NMPS off their feet. We walked and hobbled back, feeling defeated and crushed. Hears to hoping next week we’ll play better!
(I hope s0…)
Diorama - Rama
Principal Skinner from the Simpsons famously said that the annual Springfield Elementary Diorama-Rama was his favourite event on the school calendar and in year 6 we would have to agree. This week we have started creating dioramas to capture the important scenes from our Hero’s Journey Story in our dystopian worlds we created over the past month. We have just started painting our backgrounds and gathering materials that we are going to use to recreate a pivotal scene from our writing. Parents and carers be on the lookout for an announcement for our own Diorama-Rama exhibition next week, we cant wait to show you our fantastic and detailed creations.
