From Sally, Year 2 Teacher
Little People Big Dreams
Reading/Phonics
We have been building their comprehension skills by exploring ancient civilisations. We began by making predictions and visualising as we read about Cleopatra. Students have also been practising fluency to develop confident, expressive reading. They worked with a partner and had the opportunity to give their peers feedback. In Week 9, our focus has shifted to Ancient Greece, where we have designed their own mythical creatures and applied their knowledge of noun groups to make their writing more descriptive and engaging. In Phonics over the past fortnight, we have learnt about split vowel graphs and suffixes. We are consolidating our knowledge with these sounds and applying them to make silly sentences.
Writing
In the past two weeks, we have been learning about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. After being exposed to a range of interesting articles to build our content knowledge, we wrote information reports about an aspect of Ancient Egypt. There were reports on Cleopatra, mummies, pyramids, and even gold! We have also been busy writing a persuasive piece to convince the teacher that our mythical creature would make the best class pet. Would you consider hosting one of these at home?
Maths
We concluded our Fractions unit by practising worded problems. We found fractions of a collection and in doing so recognised the connection between fractions and division. We then moved on to Duration & Time, where we explored the features of calendars and practised telling time on an analog clock to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. We had fun testing our skills by completing a time scavenger hunt, where we located mini clocks hidden around the classroom and recorded the time shown on each one. Do you have a clock or a calender handy? Referring to these regularly helps build fluency.
Humanaties
We have been learning about biographies and personal histories. We have explored some Little People Big Dreams books and observed how timelines help us navigate important events throughout our lives. This led us to create our own interview questions to take home and interview a family member or friend so we could compare how childhood has changed over time. Keep up the conversations at home- our students are finding it interesting to discover more and more changes!
