First Aid Procedures and Parent Notifications at NMPS

As part of our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, we have recently been reviewing our processes and procedures related to First Aid management.

You may have noticed receiving a Sick Bay Notification email informing you that your child has attended Sick Bay for medical attention. We’d like to take this opportunity to outline our current approach to managing student illness and injury during the school day.

At North Melbourne Primary School, all teaching staff are first aid trained.

During break times, teachers on yard duty are the first point of contact for any student who is unwell or injured. They are equipped to provide immediate care for minor injuries, such as grazes, small cuts, or bumps.

If an injury is more significant—for example, a large laceration, a head injury, or a suspected fracture—the supervising teacher will give the student a Sick Bay tag

This indicates to the office staff that the student requires further assessment and care.

Our Sick Bay staff will then provide appropriate treatment and monitor the student as needed.

Parents and carers are notified in the following ways:

  • Sick Bay Notification Email: Sent for all incidents where a student receives treatment in the Sick Bay, to keep families informed.
  • Phone Call: Made immediately for any incident that is urgent or requires further medical attention, or if a child is unwell and needs to be collected.

These procedures help us ensure that your child receives timely and appropriate care, and that you are kept informed of any health-related matters that arise during school hours.

If you have any questions or concerns about our First Aid procedures, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
