From Matilda B, Year 5 Teacher
History Excursion
By Sumi & Matilda M. 5C
Recently, the Year Fives have gone to an incredible museum on an excursion. The Melbourne Museum, located in Carlton Gardens, is a natural and cultural history museum and part of Museums Victoria. It features galleries showing Australian and Victorian social history, Aboriginal cultures, science, and the environment. Notable attractions include the Forest Gallery, the Melbourne Gallery (featuring Phar Lap), and the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre. We learned about the Gold Rush, Australian History and Aboriginal Culture. This has been a good learning experience for everyone and now we have a magical moment to share with our family and friends. We all appreciate the work that the teachers have put in this memorable experience.
Cooking
By Akmam & Tia 5A
With a swish of a cooking knife, This cooking we have made the most delicious bean burrito bowl with green guacamole and a salad, as well as a delicious chilli bean bowl.
At the start, Erin explained how to chop the vegetables and then she send us off to our cooking benches. On the benches, we also had to half our ingredients, we then took the rice and Matilda toasted it with oil.
The beans were a challenge, but they were worth it after all.
first we cut all the veggies and then we got the onions and stirred it until it was pink, we then put a bit of the onion juice inside the guacamole, after that, we got the spices and put it on the bean bowls and Matilda stirred until it was perfect.
When everything was cooking, we went to get our zines, and we decorated them a bit more. As the food finished cooking, we all sat on our tables ready to eat. Then came some delicious looking rice and bean burrito bowls. We had options to add shredded cheese, salad, and pickled onions. With a swish of a spoon, we finished our full-course meal, and we were ready to continue the day!

Refugee Week
Last week was Refugee Week. We learnt that a refugee is a person who is forced to leave their home country because it is unsafe. This is different to a migrant who chooses to move to another country.
We read a book called ‘Room on our Rock’ which showed two different ways to treat people and share spaces (one was not very welcoming and the other showed how we can live together and get along with each other) - we related it to how we would treat refugees coming to Australia.
Over the week we had lots of interesting discussions about how we can make an impact and be welcoming of refugees.
Literacy
In Year 5 we have been unpacking and defining the different word groups of the English language. Noun, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, proper nouns, as well as noun groups and verb groups. We have had a lot of fun unpacking and exploring these definitions through adlib activities, where we were asked for random words (nouns, verbs, etc.) without knowing the story to then place and read into a story. The results were hilarious!
