Oh, we have some beauties
It has been a particularly exciting fortnight in Year 3, with plenty of learning and a wonderful celebration of Book Week!
Reading
We continued exploring traditional fairytales. They examined how heroes and villains are presented, considered characters’ traits and motivations, and used evidence from the stories to support their ideas. Students also continued developing their reading fluency by focusing on expression, phrasing, rhythm, smoothness and accurate word recognition.
In Writing, students became fairytale authors and created their own four-page stories.
They introduced a hero and setting, developed a clear problem involving a villain, wrote a solution and finished with a traditional fairytale ending. Students also created illustrations to accompany each part of their story. It was wonderful to see them applying their understanding of fairytale characters, settings and structures while developing imaginative stories of their own.
Maths
Students completed their learning about time and duration by solving problems involving analogue and digital clocks, units of time and elapsed time. They then began exploring probability through practical chance experiments. Students used vocabulary such as certain, likely, unlikely and impossible, made predictions and compared expected outcomes with the results of experiments involving dice, coins and other materials.
Book Week
Last week, our classrooms were transformed for Book Week! Each class decorated its door to represent a different fairytale, creating colourful displays that helped bring these familiar stories to life. The students thoroughly enjoyed contributing their ideas and artwork while also writing and illustrating fairytales of their own.
We were also incredibly fortunate to enjoy two author visits from Heidi McKinnon and Andy Griffiths. Students loved hearing about their books, creative processes and experiences as authors. These visits provided plenty of laughter and inspiration and encouraged our young readers and writers to continue developing stories of their own.
Our Book Week dress-up day last Thursday was another highlight. Students arrived in an amazing variety of costumes inspired by books and favourite characters. We celebrated with a special assembly and a parade around the gym, giving everyone an opportunity to show off their creative outfits. The excitement and enthusiasm throughout the day were fantastic!
A huge thank you to the many parents and family members who joined us for the assembly and parade. It was wonderful to see such a large audience there to celebrate with the students, and your support helped make the occasion even more special.
We are incredibly proud of the creativity, confidence and enthusiasm demonstrated by our Grade 3 students throughout Weeks 6 and 7. What a memorable Book Week it has been!
