Level Six

Maths

In Maths, students have been learning about fractions and decimals. They developed their understanding and knowledge of lowest common multiples and highest common factors, in order to manipulate and compare fractions with different denominators. We explored improper fractions and mixed numbers and placed them on number lines extending beyond one. Students then investigated place value and practised their skills in ordering and comparing decimal numbers. This week we move onto learning about angles. We encourage you to chat with your child about angles in every day situations and how you use knowledge of angles in your work and home life.

Reading

In Reading this term, students have focussed on analysing persuasive texts. They were able to use a variety of comprehension strategies to understand the text they were reading, and also to identify the author's contention.

Students learned about a range of persuasive techniques used by authors to convince their readers of a particular point of view. They were able to explore how effective these strategies were and compared different text examples.

Aleeza 6K -  I like how we are reading different texts styles and books! I also like that each week we have to do reading fluency with a partner and practise our reading and fluency, its very nice that we learn these types of topics.

Giti 6K - I liked how we learnt about persuasive techniques for better persuading and as well as the reading fluency to practice the reading and as well as with someone else.

Theme

This term students have been learning about what it means to be healthy and the many factors that influence our health choices. We have explored how our physical, mental and social wellbeing are interconnected and how the choices we make impact them.

Students have investigated influences such as family, friends, community, media, environment and personal factors, and considered how these can create barriers or support healthy choices. We have also analysed health strategies and learned to evaluate health information for its reliability. This week we've begun studying geography, including the names and locations of Australia's states, territories and capital cities.

Writing

In Writing this term, students have been developing their persuasive writing skills. They explored a range of persuasive techniques, including using high-modality language, selecting language for different audiences and explaining the ‘why’ behind statistics and evidence to make their arguments more convincing. Students also worked on strengthening their ideas by clearly explaining how their evidence supports their point of view.

We have now begun our Narrative Writing unit, with a focus on controlling the pace of a story. Students are learning how writers can slow down important moments to add detail, description and suspense, while speeding up less important events to keep the story moving. They will continue to explore how these choices can engage the reader and make their narratives more effective.

Deakin Science Lessons

🧪 Particle Science with Deakin University!

Our Grade 6 students recently stepped into the role of research scientists during a fantastic series of hands-on Science lessons. We were incredibly fortunate to host preservice teaching students from Deakin University, who brought the chemical sciences curriculum to life with interactive experiments exploring the three common states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. The highlight of the unit so far was investigating the molecular properties of perfume! Students explored how a substance can completely alter its physical state, observing how the perfume exists as a trapped liquid inside the bottle before instantly transforming into an expanding gas the moment it is exposed to the air. A massive thank you to the brilliant student teachers from Deakin University for inspiring our future scientists and making complex physical changes so much fun.
