Our excursion to Manningham Council

Hear what some of our excellent year 3 students have to say about our excursion in Week 4.

Doncaster Hill Garden

There were so many different plants, we even got to plant a pea and take it home to watch it grow! When we planted the peas we had to plant the seed about 1cm into the soil and then cover it so we couldn't see the seed. We even planted some onions as well. We had to carefully separate the onion seedlings because they were fragile and the instructor told us that we had to bury the roots of the onions into the soil. We got to water the onions as well. We also learnt about how long some plants take to grow, and about new plants like Warrigal Greens (Australian Spinach) that have been used by the First Nations people for thousands of years. People still use Warrigal Greens now.

Manningham Council

We walked to the council and we sat for a little bit. Then we went into a little room and met the mayor. We were councillors for the mayor and we all got stickers. We voted for what we thought was important for the council, like recycling, helping the elderly, parks, art and library, pets and roads and pathways. Then we decided what the best one was based on which one had the most stickers. The mayor showed us how to hit the smacky-judgey -thingey (gavel) and it got us to stop talking! We got to take a picture with the mayor and try on his special outfit.

Doncaster Library

At the library we learnt so many things about where the books go and explored the library! We enjoyed wandering around and seeing books.
