Physical Education

From Kale Vagnoni and  Mark Quinn, PE teachers

Run, climb, roll, balance, throw, catch, kick.

Molesworth Campus

We have jumped straight back into the Fundamental Movement Skills deep end to kick off the term. We’ve been taking last term’s skills and applying them to new environments and situations. MAXimising movement time during sessions has been our priority, to shake off any school holiday winter hibernation fatigue.

As the term rolls on over the coming weeks we will be exploring Koori Games and Self Defence. As always, movement will be our base.

Skills Fluency

Up at Errol St we have been revisiting some old favourites: Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching and Balancing. We’ve been discussing how these fundamental elements transfer across a range of sports, such as; how a triple jump might come in handy on the soccer pitch or the way a high jump might transfer to an AFL marking scenario. The concept of athletics and gymnastics as a movement base.

This year we will be including some of our core Health Curriculum concepts in the PE Dept Newsletter. The idea behind this is to give families a little more scope into the Health curriculum that is delivered in lessons throughout the year. These Health Hacks are designed to be a great talking point for discussions at home surrounding Health and Movement.

Sleep

The transition from school holidays can be challenging. Long days of freedom snap back to timetables and alarm clocks. We’ve continued to highlight the importance of consistent sleep schedules. Aiming to go to bed and wake up at around the same time each day can help the body's natural sleep / wake cycle, the Circadian Rhythm. Aim for each of these times to be within an hour throughout the week - so, if you usually go to bed at 8pm, try not to push it too far past 9pm on a Saturday movie night. This is a handy health hack for kids and adults alike. If you you don’t follow a schedule like this in your home, consider giving it a try for the month of August and reflect on any changes at the end.
