Sewing
Year 3 and 4 students have had a great start to the term as they begin learning basic sewing skills in preparation for their upcoming textile art unit inspired by artist Anne Kelly. Students have been practising new stitches, with many confidently supporting and encouraging their classmates along the way. It has been fantastic to see such teamwork and collaboration during our first week back.
To help build their confidence students are encouraged to continue practising their sewing skills at home. Simple activities such as threading a needle, tying knots and practising their running stitch will give them a great head start as we begin creating our textile artworks in the coming weeks.
Pop Art
In Year 5, we have been exploring the Pop Art movement learning about its bold colours, striking imagery and connection to popular culture. Students have been viewing the work of famous Pop Artists including Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, to understand how everyday objects, comics and consumer culture can inspire creative artworks.
Students are now in the design phase of their own Pop Art-inspired pieces, developing a range of sketches based on popular culture from their own generation or inspired by the iconic style of that time. Over the coming weeks, they will transform their favourite designs into embossed foil artworks, experimenting with texture, pattern and relief.
Printing
Yea 6 students have launched into a printmaking project inspired by Australian illustrator James Gulliver Hancock who is well known for his detailed drawings of buildings and neighbourhoods from around the world. As part of the project, students have explored the unique architectural styles found in North Melbourne, including workers' cottages, terrace houses, Federation homes and Art Deco apartments.
Students are now developing their sketches, carefully observing photographs of houses from our local area which will be transformed into a series of foam prints over the coming weeks. Some students have even chosen to draw their own houses adding personal connection to their artwork.
