Science Sparks!

- Science and Agriculture

Welcome back to another exciting year in the world of Science at Camden High School! As we commence 2026, there is a genuine buzz across the faculty, with students from Years 7 to 12 diving into hands-on learning, collaborative challenges, and smart study support through digital platforms. Science continues to be a vibrant and dynamic part of school life.

Introducing the STILE App

- Your Science Learning Hub

A highlight this year has been the use of the STILE app, an innovative digital learning tool that gives every student from Year 7 to Year 10 access to interactive science lessons. STILE was made available to Year 10 only last year as a trial. STILE blends engaging media, questions, practical activities, and real-world science examples into each unit, so students can explore topics at their own pace and build confidence along the way.

Through STILE:

  • Students can revisit classwork to reinforce understanding before assessments.
  • Teachers can track student progress and offer targeted feedback.
  • Families can get insights into what their child is learning and how they are progressing.
  • Resources are available anywhere, anytime - perfect for revision, catch-ups or extension work.

Whether it is exploring the nature of matter, understanding forces and motion, or investigating energy transfers, STILE makes learning interactive, personalised, and fun. Students are encouraged to log in regularly, complete tasks thoughtfully, and use the app to prepare for assessments and class discussions.

Canvas - Learning Platform

Alongside STILE, Canvas is our main learning management system for science. Canvas brings course outlines, study resources, announcements, and formative tasks together in one place. Students from Years 7 to 12 are accustomed to checking Canvas daily for:

  • Weekly announcements about upcoming lessons, practicals, and assessments.
  • Study resources, including revision slides, practice questions and links to helpful videos.
  • Formative assessments, where students can practise and receive feedback before summative tasks.
  • Submission portals for assignments and practical write-ups.

Canvas allows students to stay organised, manage due dates, and deepen their understanding by revisiting lesson materials. Teachers regularly update Canvas with tailored resources, especially ahead of major assessments, so it is essential that students make a habit of checking in at least once a day.

Science Practical Activities

Science at Camden High is alive with discovery and experimentation! A core part of our program is giving students authentic practical experiences that build skills and scientific thinking.

Year 7 - Bunsen Burner Licence

Year 7 students have been mastering the basics of laboratory safety and technique through the Bunsen Burner Licence. This practical activity teaches them how to light and control a Bunsen burner safely, handle glassware confidently, and follow step-by-step procedures accurately. Once students have demonstrated correct technique and safety awareness, they earn their “licence” - a rite of passage in the science lab!

Year 8 – Microscopy and Observation

In Year 8, students have begun exploring the microscopic world. Using light microscopes, they are learning how to prepare slides, focus specimens, and make careful observations. From plant cells to tiny organisms in pond water, students are developing their scientific drawing and descriptive skills. This unit strengthens both practical technique and observational accuracy - key skills in any scientist’s toolkit.

Year 9 - Energy Investigations with Pendulums

Year 9 students are currently investigating energy transfers and transformations through pendulum experiments. By timing swings, altering release angles, and comparing energy at different points in the motion, students are developing deeper conceptual understanding of kinetic and potential energy. These experiments involve careful measurement, data collection, and analysis - all essential parts of scientific practice.

Year 10 - Motion and Forces: Crash Trolleys

In Year 10, students are using crash trolleys to explore motion, forces, momentum and energy. Through a series of formative assessments, they experiment with different masses, velocities, and impact conditions, learning how to calculate and interpret results. The emphasis is on scientific reasoning - predicting outcomes, testing hypotheses, and explaining results with evidence.

Assessments: Formative and Summative

Formative and summative assessments play an important role in our Science program.

Formative assessments help students check their understanding throughout a unit and receive feedback before major tasks. Tools such as Canvas quizzes, STILE checkpoints, practical observation sheets and peer feedback sessions are used regularly to support learning.

Summative assessments provide a structured opportunity for students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed. These may include extended written tasks, practical reports, unit tests, or structured inquiry investigations. We are proud of the way our students engage with these challenges, thoughtfully, collaboratively and with a focus on improvement.

Senior Science: Years 11 and 12

Our senior students in Years 11 and 12 are deeply engaged in their subject-specific courses. Whether it is Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Earth and Environmental Science, students are exploring advanced concepts, conducting detailed practical investigations, and preparing for HSC examinations. The level of commitment and curiosity displayed by our senior cohort is inspiring and we are excited to see their progress throughout 2026.

Canvas continues to be crucial for senior study routines, with regular updates of study guides, practice examinations, and examiner-style questions tailored to each course. Students are encouraged to use a combination of Canvas, Atomi/STILE (where relevant), class notes and practical experiences to support their revision and learning goals.

Looking Ahead

We encourage all students to take full advantage of the digital tools and practical opportunities available to them. Science is not just something that happens in class - it’s a way of thinking, questioning, exploring and discovering. With STILE, Canvas, classroom practicals, and a rich suite of assessments, students are set up for success in 2026 and beyond.

Here's to a fantastic year of curiosity, experimentation, growth and achievement in Science at Camden High School!
