Year 3 News

We’ve had another busy and productive week of learning in Year 3.
National Reconciliation Week
As People of Faith we observed National Reconciliation Week and reflected on this year’s theme, "All In for Reconciliation." Throughout the week, we explored how each of us can play a part in building a more respectful and inclusive Australia. In Year 3, we brainstormed ways we can be ‘all in’, such as learning about the rich cultures and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, reading stories that celebrate First Nations perspectives, attending cultural events, participating in an Acknowledgement of Country, and demonstrating respect, empathy and understanding in our everyday interactions.
Literacy
As readers, we have enjoyed exploring picture story books that celebrate Indigenous cultures, histories and traditions. Some of the texts we have shared include Sorry Day, 60,000 Years and You, Me and My Place. These beautifully written and illustrated stories have provided us with valuable insights into the rich heritage, cultural practices and family connections of Australia’s First Nations Peoples.
As writers, we were inspired by You, Me and My Place to create descriptive pieces about our favourite places. We used the six senses—sight, sound, smell, touch, taste and feeling—to generate ideas and enrich our descriptions. We also are learning to incorporate powerful verbs, vivid adjectives and engaging adverbs to create detailed and expressive writing that brings our special places to life for the reader.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)
On Wednesday at 12:00 pm, we joined students from across Australia to participate in a special National Simultaneous Storytime event. Together, we enjoyed listening to Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller.
We were delighted to hear the authors, Adrian Lloyd and Adam Jackson , read the story aloud and share their inspiration for writing the book. We also listened to illustrator, Jake A Minton, explain how he created the vibrant and engaging illustrations. As part of the session, we took part in a mini drawing lesson, learning how to use simple shapes to draw the main character, Luna Roo.
It was a wonderful opportunity to pause, relax and share the joy of reading together while celebrating the power of storytelling.
Maths
This week we began our Data Representation Unit. We have been learning to identify the difference between Categorical Data and Numerical Data.
Categorical data is a type of data that represents categories or groups.
Numerical data is collected using numbers. The response to the question is a number.
We’ve also been learning to use Google Sheets to type in given data accurately.
Inquiry
As researchers, we have been working collaboratively in groups to investigate significant events in Australian history. These events include the First Fleet, the Eureka Stockade, the Ned Kelly Gang, Federation, the Burke and Wills Expedition, and the Gold Rush.
Using a data chart, we gathered and organised key information from a range of sources. The next step will be to use these research notes to jointly write an informative text about our chosen event. We will then share our findings with the class, helping us deepen our understanding of Australia's past.
