Italian Update

BUONGIORNO!

Salve a tutti! (Hello everyone!)

Oggi in Italia è la…(Today in Italy, it’s the..)

FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA

La Festa della Repubblica, is a national public holiday in Italy, celebrating the establishment of the Italian Republic and the end of the monarchy which took place on June 2nd 1946. This year marks the 80th Anniversary! Some of you may already know that a republic is a form of government in which the people elect, or choose, the leaders that will represent them, in this case a President. Italians celebrate this National Day by watching parades, fireworks, concerts, and sharing picnics with family and friends.

Each year a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is located at the front of the Vittorio Emanuele II Monumento Nazionale, (also known as il Vittoriano, or Altare della Patria - Altar of the Fatherland), in Rome. The tomb was completed in 1924 and has an eternal flame lit up day and night, to honour all of Italy’s fallen soldiers.

I will be marking this special day at school this week, by playing the Italian National Anthem at the beginning of each Italian session. Officially the anthem is called Il canto degli italiani but more commonly known by Italians and across the world as L’inno di Mameli, or Fratelli d’Italia. It is not only sung/played at La Festa della Repubblica but is also sung at many other special occasions such as football matches, sporting events and other national celebrations. Grade 5/6 should be very familiar with this anthem for they heard it numerous times back in Term 1, when they were learning about the Winter Olympics in Milano/Cortina.

FESTA ITALIANA

Just in case you missed it, this is a reminder that our St Fidelis school community will very soon be having our own FESTA ITALIANA this term! Please make sure you put the following details in your diary…

Quando? (When): Martedì 16 giugno 2026 (Tuesday 16th June 2026)

Dove? (Where): Scuola Elementare di St Fidelis

L’orario (Time): 9:00am - 2:30pm (TBC)

As part of the festivities, we will be having our usual sfilata di costumi italiani (Italian themed dress up parade), which means mamma / papà / sorella / fratellononna / nonno, get those creative juices flowing and start thinking about what Italian costume your child could wear? Perhaps…a famous Italian? an Italian landmark? a traditional Italian costume? an Italian vehicle? Italian Food? I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s costume!

On the day, genitori, (parents) are invited to watch the sfilata, (parade) but need to drop their children off to class at the normal time first and then go to the hall, take a seat and wait for the Italian parade to start, shortly around 9:00am. The parade will mark the beginning of the day’s Italian festivities. Once the parade is finished, parents may go up to the children’s respective classes and see their Italian work that they have been doing in italiano, so far this year. This should all be finished just before 10:00am. Parents can then go home and this will then allow the children to start their next Italian activity for the day.

At this stage I would also like to thank the P&F Committee for organising the Italian themed lunch. More information on this to come through the school’s regular communication platform.
