Year 5/6 News

Writing
As writers, students continued to develop their narrative writing skills by creating short stories based on different events from the Eureka Story. They focused on including circumstances such as who, what, when, where and why to provide important information for the reader. Students also used expanded noun groups to make their writing more detailed, descriptive and engaging. Our 5/6s also had a go at editing their work by correcting spelling mistakes and finding synonyms for their word choices. It is amazing to see how much they have grown as writers this year!
KidsView Social Justice Incursion (Bahay Tuluyan)
On Monday, students participated in a Social Justice incursion presented by KidsView and Bahay Tuluyan, a Filipino social justice organisation. Through engaging activities, including a lolly distribution challenge, students explored issues of fairness and inequality and gained a greater understanding of the advantages many of us have compared to others around the world. They reflected on how factors such as disability, race, religion, location, age and access to resources can impact people's opportunities and quality of life. The incursion challenged students to think about the positive change they can create in their own communities, with the key message being: "What can I do with what I have and where I am to make the world a better place?"
Inquiry
As part of our Inquiry unit, students were introduced to a Question Matrix to help them ask deeper and more thoughtful questions about the Eureka Stockade. Rather than focusing only on simple factual questions, the Question Matrix encourages students to analyse, predict, imagine, and evaluate historical events and perspectives. Developing strong questions is an important part of the inquiry process, as it helps students think critically, guide their research, and deepen their understanding of history. Students used the matrix to generate a range of questions that will drive their investigation of the Eureka Stockade throughout the unit.
Rocket Launch Excursion
On Friday, we had an exciting day at Shore Reserve as we launched our rockets. It was fantastic to see how much they had improved since our first launch earlier in the year. Students applied their learning from previous testing, making modifications to their designs to help their rockets fly higher and straighter. Everyone enjoyed watching the launches and celebrating the progress they had made through perseverance, problem-solving, and teamwork. Our foundation buddies even came along to see!
SLA Meeting
Our first SLA (Student Leadership Action) meeting was held last week. Congratulations to Clara, Hazel and Jeevan for leading the discussion with confidence and enthusiasm, and for taking on the initiative to design and promote a poster about our meeting. It was wonderful to see our Year 3 and Year 5/6 student leaders working together to share ideas and discuss ways we can continue to improve and care for our learning environment. Their thoughtful contributions and commitment to making a positive difference were impressive to see.
