Student Wellbeing

GEM Highlight

This week, 2NA has showcased GEM learning in a wonderful way through the creation of their new GEM Wall, a visible celebration of student voice, wellbeing, and positive school culture within their classroom community.

The GEM Wall has provided meaningful opportunities for students to engage in regular GEM Chats, with our GEM Leader confidently leading discussions and encouraging thoughtful reflection around kindness, inclusion, and wellbeing. These conversations have beautifully demonstrated students’ growing understanding of our TRP learning and their ability to apply these concepts in authentic and purposeful ways.

It has been fantastic to see students confidently sharing their ideas, making connections to their learning, and modelling the values that strengthen our school community.

Special congratulations to Ms Ascenzo and GEM Leader Elena for their outstanding leadership in demonstrating their learning. Their dedication and enthusiasm have created a wonderful example of student leadership in action and a powerful showcase of GEM learning at its best.

Strategies to Support Transitions

As we move further into the term, it is common to notice some students finding transitions more challenging, particularly during morning drop-off and the shift from home to school routines.

At this stage of the term, it is common to see:

  • Increased hesitation around separating from caregivers
  • Heightened emotions during morning routines
  • Difficulty settling into the school day
  • Greater sensitivity to changes in routine

Research shows that as the term progresses and students manage sustained social, emotional, and academic demands, routine fatigue can make transitions feel more difficult. Research also highlights that calm, predictable routines and supportive adult relationships help children feel safe, regulated, and more ready to engage in learning.

How we are supporting students at school

Using these evidence-based approaches, staff are prioritising calm and predictable routines, explicitly teaching emotional regulation strategies, and supporting students to identify and name their emotions. Through consistent relational support, we are helping students build confidence and independence as they navigate daily transitions.

Strategies that can help at home

1. Keep routines steady

Predictable mornings help children feel safe and prepared for the day ahead.

2. Acknowledge feelings while showing confidence

Phrases such as “I know this feels tricky, and I know you can do this” validate emotion while reinforcing capability.

3. Keep goodbyes calm and brief

A clear and confident farewell supports smoother separation.

4. Build positive self-talk

Simple reminders such as:

  • “I can do hard things.”
  • “I am safe at school.”
  • “This feeling will pass.”

5. Prioritise connection first A calm moment of connection before school can help regulate emotions and support a smoother transition into the day.

Through small, consistent strategies at both school and home, we can continue building confidence, resilience, and emotional independence in our students.

Working Together

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing, transitions, or school engagement, we strongly encourage families to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or Bianka & Vicky.

Strong family-school partnerships are essential in supporting student wellbeing and success. Research consistently highlights that when schools and families work collaboratively, students experience stronger emotional security, increased confidence, and improved learning outcomes.

Open and ongoing communication allows us to work together to provide consistent support, respond proactively to challenges, and ensure every student feels safe, connected, and empowered to thrive both socially and academically.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students flourish.

Have a wonderful week,

Bianka and Vicky
