Roxy Green Warriors!

Keeping our school (and planet) green and clean!

Hello to the Roxy School Community!

Last term, we started the Roxy Green Warriors initiative, a school club that focuses on delivering environmental education and school-wide incentives to keep our school (and the planet) clean and green. You may have heard of the students and teachers talking about the new Yard Tidy Stars and Nude Food Stars. This is an incentive program introduced into the school to help tidy the yard and help raise awareness about the impact of single-use plastics on our environment. This term our fortnightly winners have been 1C and PB! Congratulations to these classes for working hard to make sure our school and environment stays clean and green! These classes names went into a raffle and the winning name received a canteen voucher. Congratulations to Beran from 1C who won the raffle! Next week when we return from remote learning, we will pick a winner from PB. Next term, the overall Term 2 winner will be announced. The winning class will receive a Hot Chip Lunch!

Up until now, our school yard has been covered in plastic wrappers, bottles and bottle tops, cling wrap, and all sorts of rubbish. This makes our school (and planet) look very messy. We want to represent Roxburgh Park PS as a place that all members of our school community can be proud of. This term, we have introduced Nude Food Stars to try to stop litter at the source - lunch boxes! Every fortnight, the class with most Nude Food Stars get to enter the draw to win a canteen voucher!

As members or our school community, you can help our students earn these Nude Food Stars by ensuring that student lunches are wrapper and plastic-waste free! This means that less rubbish is coming into the yard. Not only that, but Nude Food lunches help to eliminate single-use plastics from our environment, so that future generations can enjoy a clean and safe planet.

What are Nude Foods?

Nude foods are foods that are not covered in single use plastics. These can be very difficult to find, as the only foods that come unpackaged from a supermarket are simply fruits and vegetables. However, you can minimise your plastic consumption by buying bulk packaged foods and packaging these foods yourself into reusable plastic containers. For example, you can buy bigger bags of chips, pretzels, cookies or other snack foods instead of individually wrapped lunchbox snacks from the supermarket to minimise plastic waste and earn your child Nude Food stars.

The best Nude Foods (and consequently, the healthiest) are foods that come with their own wrapping! That being fruits and vegetables. However, you can also help to protect the environment from extra plastic waste by making sandwiches or even packing left-overs from last nights' dinner.

How can YOU help?

It is a BIG change to stop relying on single-use plastics - and not always an easy one. But here are some tips to help you on your way to plastic-free lunches so that your child can earn some Nude Food stars for their classroom!

  • Buy your child/children a segmented lunchbox – alternatively, you can use small reusable plastic containers to package food individually.
  • Use thermal or insulated containers to keep food warm or cold.
  • To be extra green – have a look at opportunity or thrift stores for second-hand containers - just make sure to give them a good wash before use.

Many thanks to the Roxy School Community in advance for working towards a cleaner and greener school, and thus, a cleaner, greener planet for future generations to enjoy!
