Year 5 Report
Term 2 2021
Well done to all Grade 5's for another great term! A highlight for the Grade 5 students has been working with our Grade 1 buddies. We have helped them to practice their directional language through the use of Minecraft and publish their writing using Microsoft Word. Another highlight for some of our students was the Cross Country event. It was a windy, cold day but no one got blown away! Congratulations to the Grade 5 students who represented our school so magnificently. Mr Ly, Lisa and Miss Bianca wish you all a wonderful break and we can't wait to see you in Term 3!
This term in Reading, Grade 5 students have read a variety of fiction and non fiction texts, including biographies about inspirational people and poetry. We read about the lives of Malala and Adam Goodes, their achievements, challenges and legacy. The students practiced reading strategies such as skimming and scanning a text, identifying and searching for key words and answering Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me and On My Own question types.
We analysed the personality traits of characters and inspiration people and created personality profiles based on their actions and thoughts.
Once again it's been a busy term of Lexile reading and regular library borrowing, not to mention exciting serial novels.
In Writing this Term, Grade 5 students developed their narrative and persuasive writing styles. Students developed their writing stamina, using the story elements (setting, characters, problem, key events and solution) to plan their narrative stories before writing for an extended period of time. The Grade 5 students worked hard to plan, draft and publish very convincing persuasive pieces about topics related to their lives including, 'Should assembly be banned?', 'Being the Prime Minister would be a great job!' and 'Being famous would be the best job in the world!'. Students were able to include a variety of persuasive language into their writing, using emotive language and emotional pleas.
Grade 5 students researched, planned, drafted and published a biography about an inspirational person. These included: Dylan Alcott, Malala, Barack Obama, Bachar Houli, Liz Cambage and Tim Cahill.
We became poets too and wrote biographical poems about ourselves and inspirational people.
This term was all about addition and subtraction. We learnt many different strategies for addition including compensation, split, jump and using the vertical algorithm. The Grade 5 students practiced using the strategies that they liked best to solve worded problems. We then applied similar strategies to solve subtraction problems. We have worked hard on measuring the perimeter of regular shapes and objects found in the classroom. No one in Grade 5 should ever get lost after lots of work around using, reading and interpreting maps.
This term our Inquiry unit focused on democracy in Australia. We explored the three levels of government and the roles and responsibilities of various members of parliament. We looked at democracy and why voting is an important aspect of Australian society. Did you know that even though colonised Australia is considered to be young, we have one of the oldest continuous democracies in the world!
The Grade 5 team,
Bianca Larubina, Lisa Edwards-Loach, Tan Ly and Madonna Kundukulangara.
