Year 3 Report

Term 2

We made it!! What a term 🙃 On top of our usual learning we also did an amazing job completing NAPLAN for the very first time AND we survived another lockdown!! Overall we have had a very successful Term 2 and could not be prouder of our students.

Mathematics

We began this term looking at addition and subtraction. We learned about commutativity and the link between addition and subtraction. Students worked on understanding doubles and near doubles, tens facts and known facts as well as a variety of other mental strategies. The students are able to apply these strategies to help them solve both addition and subtraction problems. We then moved on to length, measuring some really fun objects like lolly snakes! We finished the term having some fun transforming shapes.

Our individual Addition and Subtraction Goals

Reading

This term in reading, we worked on our comprehension of texts. We looked at four different types of questions and how we go about answering these questions. The improvement in the answers we are seeing has been amazing! We have also improved our comprehension through visualising and inferring using clues in the text. After that we looked at reading fluently. We worked on accuracy, pace, expression and fluency. We are proud to say that we have no more 'robot reading' in Grade 3 🙂 Throughout the term we have also worked on building our reading stamina. At the beginning of the term we were reading for approximately 10 minutes before we became distracted. Now we are easily reading for 30 minutes, focusing the whole time.

The question types that we have been, and continue to, learn about.

Writing

This term we looked at persuasive texts. We developed our understanding of the writing features used and had some fun trying to convince others to agree with our point of view. There were some good respectful debates had which was fun. We then moved on to poetry. We explored different types of poetry and wrote a Haiku and a Cinquain poem.

Inquiry

This term we looked at different forms of health. We looked at physical, mental and social health and how they are all important to our overall wellbeing. We also looked at safety both inside and outside the home. We watched different safety campaigns and identified what the message was and who it was aimed at. We are in the process of designing our own safety campaign that we will present to the class next week.
