Preparing Devices for Term 4 and Beyond:

 Digital Balance & Tech Check

As Term 3 draws to a close, the upcoming holiday break offers a welcome change of pace for our school community. Beyond resting and recharging, the break provides an ideal window for families to conduct a quick "digital tune-up" on student devices. Taking time now to update software, review security settings, and re-establish digital boundaries with parental controls ensures our students return to school with safe, reliable tools, while building crucial life skills for their future beyond school.

1. Cyber Security & Smart Digital Habits

Safe online habits are essential as students grow into independent adults navigating online shopping, banking, and digital services.

  • Updates: Ensure operating systems and apps are fully updated to patch security vulnerabilities and protect personal data.
  • Storage: Back up schoolwork and remove unused software and files so devices run smoothly for Term 4.
  •

2. Parental Controls & Admin Access

A student’s device is primarily a learning tool. Maintaining appropriate settings helps keep it a safe, focused space. Maintaining appropriate boundaries helps ensure it remains a safe space dedicated to growth and education.

  • Remove Admin Access: Students should not hold administrator privileges on their devices. Using standard user accounts prevents accidental malware downloads, unauthorised app installations, and the disabling of security filters.
  • Update Filters: Review parental controls to restrict access to unsafe or high-risk areas of the internet.
  • Expectations: Have an open chat about using school devices for education and creation rather than for constant entertainment.
  •

3. A Well-Earned Screen Reset

The holidays are first and foremost a time to disconnect and recharge.

  • Curfews: Store all devices in a shared family space outside bedrooms overnight to safeguard sleep.
  • Unplugged Time: Balance screen time with outdoor activities, hobbies, and face-to-face family time.
