Towering Above
Reading
This week in Reading we have been learning about different natural disasters and how to distinguish between primary and secondary sources. We have been learning how to ‘skim and scan’ texts in order to find answers to our specific questions and how to find data to graph and map while reading. We have looked at bushfires, floods and cyclones and hurricanes and have discovered how to prevent and manage this natural disasters.
Writing
In Writing this week we have been learning how to structure an information report and how to expand on our ideas with different types of detailed explanations. We planned an information report on a topic we knew a lot about and then also began to write an information report on how to effectively manage bushfires using information and sources we looked at during reading.
Maths
We began our shape unit in maths this week. We looked at the properties of 2 and 3D shapes, we learned how to find the cross section of a 3D shape and then began to look at the points of symmetry, rotational symmetry and flips, slides, reflections and rotations of 2D shapes. We explored this with standard polygons and with famous brand logos.
Open Classrooms
We had a wonderful time inviting our families in to watch us learn on Friday in week 5. We completed a team building challenge where we had to build the tallest tower using only tape and A4 paper. Each member of the team has a specific role to make the team work and we had fun trying different methods to make the biggest tower possible. We also enjoyed taking our families around and showing them the specialist classrooms.
