Molesworth Street Kindergarten

From Audrey, Rachel, Amy and Sakoon, Early Childhood teachers
Over the past few weeks, the children in the Rainbow Lorikeet Room have been exploring the Waring (Wombat) season through stories, discussions, songs, movement, and nature-based learning experiences. Through reading about wombats and Australian animals, the children developed an understanding of seasonal changes, animal habitats, and caring for the natural environment while also engaging with Aboriginal perspectives and connections to Country.
The children enthusiastically participated in the “Dig Like a Wombat” song along with Australian animal body movement experiences. Through digging, hopping, stretching, and crawling movements, children strengthened their gross motor skills, coordination, balance, listening skills, and confidence while expressing themselves creatively through music and movement.
During outdoor nature walks in our yard , the children collected leaves, sticks, bark, and seed pods to collaboratively create a large wombat artwork as a group. This experience encouraged teamwork, communication, creativity, problem-solving, and environmental awareness as children shared ideas, worked together, and explored the textures and features of natural materials.
These experiences supported children’s sense of belonging, wellbeing, confidence, communication, and connection with the world around them in line with VEYLDF Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Throughout the program, educators also continued to embed the Child Safe Standards by promoting children’s voices, agency, inclusion, respectful relationships, and emotional wellbeing within a safe and supportive learning environment.
