JAZZ & SWING NIGHT

Notes swelled on the night of  August 8th at the Kew High School annual Jazz and Swing night. The Stage Band, Jazz Band, String Orchestra and Barking Mad Bartosy’s all came together to delight the audiences at the Steps Restaurant at Box Hill Institute.

Over fish and chips and the odd cup of jam donuts the audience was treated to a variety of styles from the Blues Brothers, Aretha and beyond. Under the capable hands of Martin Corcoran and Slava Iourgaev the students in these groups demonstrated the variety of skills we have here at Kew High School.

Well done to all music students who took part. It was a fantastic night of music.

VICTORIAN SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Last year it was a Gold. What would it be this year? On Thursday 15th August, the Stage Band once again took part in the Victorian Schools Music Festival. As part of the Intermediate Jazz Ensemble Category, they had prepared three charts to be played before a panel of judges.

Under the tight leadership of Martin Corcoran the group performed with a big sound and lively feel. Solos from Elton

Paraha, Ashley Mcgowan, Max Castree and Mac Paraha were confident and creative, impressing guest judge, Willie Murillo. He workshopped with the group after their performance and the students learned valuable techniques from a very experienced Jazz musician.

At the end of the evening Kew High School was awarded a Gold for their performance, thus maintaining the high standard, they have been working so hard to achieve. Well done to all the students involved in the Stage Band.
