Year 10 Film

Year 10 Film class at LaTrobe University

On Thursday 25th July, the Year 10 Media – Film class took the bus to LaTrobe University to participate in a workshop on screen sound. Nobody knew what to expect, including the teachers Mr.Tran and Mr.Gesundheit but what a day it turned out to be!

The class was bundled into a small room where they were introduced to the concepts of sound and foley sound in cinema by two former LaTrobe students. We were shown four short animation excerpts which they would need sound added to. The class was then broken up into four groups. Two groups went outside to record atmosphere sound using professional recording equipment. The other two groups went into the recording studio. One group recorded sound effects and voice overs for their animation excerpt while the second group was in the mixing room. The two groups then swapped. After lunch all four groups swapped tasks and then they had to edit their excerpts using the sound they recorded outside and in the studio. At the end of the day, the class watched their handiwork. The result was four professional looking films with fantastic sound and foley sound. The students found the day to be very engaging. We were able to work with professional equipment as well as learn from professionals. We also had time to have a scrumptious lunch and wander around the university. Thankyou LaTrobe University for running this fantastic workshop and giving Kew high school students this wonderful opportunity!
