Teach The Teacher

On Monday September 2nd  the House Leaders from Years 9-11 were privileged to be given the chance to direct a professional development program for the teachers at Kew High School during their staff meeting. More formally known as the “Teach the Teacher” program, the concept was first brought to us by VicSRC, an organisation that exists to empower students across Victoria. With their support, we were able to identify an area of improvement in our school and thus begin to create a personal development program to address it.

After looking into the results from the Attitudes for Schooling Survey from 2018-2019, we identified that the relationships between students and teachers were quite concerning, particularly from a student’s outlook on their teacher’s concern for their wellbeing. After many meetings and lengthy discussion, our team had created fun, engaging development session for both parties.

The staff meeting was a great success. It was great to see majority of the teachers at our school contributing in all the activities with open minds. There were great discussions at each table addressing the areas that both students and teachers could do to better each other’s communication and connection. In short, it was concludedthat there would require an effort from both parties to further improve Kew High’s culture and the student-teacher relationships that are created for the time we spend here.

The ideas and information taken from the meeting will be put together into a document that we will take to the whole Student Representative Council and will be sent out to teachers. These ideas will shape certain goals for next year and continue the important discussion about student-teacher relationships. On behalf of the Year 9-11 House Leaders, we would like to thank all the teachers for such an exciting meeting and for constantly being there for us throughout our time here at Kew High. We are all ecstatic for what the future holds and the improvements that we can make together.
