Intermediate Division Badminton

Last week, a group of Year 9 and 10 students went to Darebin Community Sports Center at Reservoir High School on Plenty Rd Reservoir for the regional badminton tournament. Once we arrived, we split into teams, with 4 people on each team. We were up against Preston, Thornbury and Reservoir and during each match there were four single matches and then doubles. Throughout the day we met lots of new people, were able to have a fun experience playing a sport against other schools, as well as being a little bit competitive. At the end of each game we shook each other's hands and were able to talk to the other players from each school. By the end of the day, one of the girls teams was asked to play in the finals, up against Reservoir. It was tough competition, Reservoir coming out on top, but a valiant effort from Northcote overall! It was a fun day and a great experience!

Intermediate Division Soccer

On Thursday, the year 9 girls soccer team won all three games and made it into regionals.

the first game they won 13-0, second game won 4-0 and the last 5-1. There were some great skills by everyone especially Lyla with her 9 goals!

Two pools of 4 contested the Darebin Boys Soccer at The Darebin International Sports Centre. With our Year 10 having Work Experience they were not eligible for selection but the Year 9 boys went through the day with two wins and draw against older and bigger opposition.

Game 1 vs Preston. 2-0 win. An early goal was a great way to start. NHS controlled the whole game very well with everyone doing their role well staying in formation not letting Preston build momentum. A late goal killed off the game to secure a deserved win first up.

Game 2 vs Lalor. 1-1 draw. The most rewarding result of the day. Lalor scored very early and a second goal conceded would’ve most likely been game over. From there, the boys played exceptionally well to absorb pressure and defend resiliently the whole game. Austin Iaonnou finished a late chance smoothly past the keeper late on to snatch a draw against a strong Lalor side.

Game 3 vs St Johns. 2-0 win. Needing a win by a healthy margin to progress the boys started well with Finbar Kennedy scoring a goal off the outside of the boot in the first half. From there the game ebbed and flowed with Northcote finishing with a win.

All of the team represented the school well with the boys and girls team’s fixtures conveniently alternating they went and supported each other’s games. In defence Matthew Scopelitti and Will Giannakopoulos were rock solid, in midfield Jay Ryan and Noah D’Crus controlled and distributed very well. Up front Austin Ioannou and Alec Somers continually made runs. Chris Stasis and Finbar Kennedy ran up and down the wings all game too. Unfortunately Lalor progressed to the final vs Thornbury HS on superior goal difference as they won by greater margins vs St Johns and Preston.

Intermediate Division AFL

Tuesday 24th May saw an uncharacteristically warm and sunny day for the Intermediate Girls Footy team to venture to CT Barling Reserve to face Thornbury High School in the only match for the Division. Northcote came in heavy favourites with a strong group of 23 Year 9 and 10 girls, while Thornbury struggled with numbers, only able to get 18 starters, resulting in a 16 vs 16 match. It was a family affair with several pairs of sisters dominating the first half for Northcote in the Hargreaves (Zoe and Phoebe), Clarkes (Emmerson and Willow), Stapletons (Jada and Amie) and Williams (Jade and Ruby) all contributing solidly around the ground and on the scoreboard. With a 40 point lead at half time and 7 players on the Northcote bench, Zoe, Phoebe and Ruby showed great sportsmanship by volunteering to switch allegiances and help out Thornbury in the second half. Their impact immediately resulted in a much more even affair, but Northcote still proved too strong, winning all 4 quarters. The sky is the limit for this experienced and skilled team, who will have to wait until next term to compete in the Regional competition. Our Intermediate Boys Football team were also down at CT Barling ovals, taking on Thornbury in the division competition. The team had been thrown together after just one training, so we set the goal of learning everyone's names before the ball was bounced.

The first quarter was an arm wrestle, before we got lucky with a few goals just before the first break. The talk around the team was really positive, with a focus on working as a team and communication. In the second quarter we were a lot more efficient at both ends of the ground, with the defence keeping Thornbury to one scoring shot while our midfield kept the pressure up and our forwards made the most of our opportunities.

The second half gave the opportunity to try different setups and tactics in preparation for Regionals on July 20th. The leadership shown by both the Year 9s and 10s was really impressive and the 7 goals kicked by Thomas Sweetman provided us with a reliable focal point, with Gus Kossatz at his feet getting 4 goals himself.

With only one game for the day, the boys went on to support the girls' team in their impressive with over Thornbury, showing great team spirit.

Intermediate State Softball

The Intermediate Girls Softball team ventured to Mount Waverley Softball Association last Thursday, to compete in the State Finals- a fantastic achievement in itself given most were first time softballers! With the competition split into two pools we had two games to play to make the final. First up we face Brentwood, who had some experienced players and coaches. Historically slow starters to competition days, the trend continued with Brentwood winning by a resounding 17-1 after 4 innings. Jess Scally scored our only home run for the match.

Our second match was against Northern Bay, who also had a big loss to Brentwood, so our hopes were high for a more competitive match and that's what we got. After 2 innings rain stopped play with the scores Northcote 8 to Northern Bay 6. The Northcote girls failed to score in the 3rd innings while Northern Bay added one more to their total. 8-7 after the third. With only 10 minutes left of playing time remaining, we were pretty keen to call it a day and take the win but the umpire called us in for a 4th innings. Northcote again were unable to score which left the door open for Northern Bay who needed 1 run to draw or 2 to win. Enter Jade Williams. With consistent pitching all day, Jade managed to hold her nerve and pitch well to get 3 outs without conceding a run. Northcote winning 8-7. Overall, a fantastic day with some great fielding in short stop from Minke Cook and excellent work behind the plate by catcher Elena Cooke.

Division Athletics

Last Friday, our NHS Athletics team travelled to Meadowglen Athletics Track to compete in the Darebin Division Athletics. Although our team of athletes was smaller than other years due to illness and other school commitments, we still managed to have a great day with lots of enthusiasm and plenty of ribbons at the end of the day.

Unfortunately due to slippery conditions the High Jump was unable to go ahead. We will be contacting those students who were meant to compete in high jump and asking them to submit their PB’s to compare with other schools.

Thank you to all members of our Aths team showing what great sports you are supporting not only students from NHS but also cheering on others.

All first place winners will go through to the Regional Athletics Carnival in August.
