Chinese Cultural Excursion

Chinese Dragon, NGV collection

Exploring Chinatown and the NGV Chinese collection

On Friday 20 May, the Year 11 Chinese VET class went on an excursion to visit the NGV Chinese collection. We started off by catching the tram to our first stop, Chinatown. Our first task was Chinese character recognition competition. We were walking around the streets and stopping before different signs in Chinese. Trying to recognise all the Chinese characters on different signs was challenging but full of fun at the same time. We headed to HuTong restaurant to have lunch after the competition. The food was tasty and filling, it was a good start to the day.

After the lunch, we went to the NGV Chinese collection. We saw lots of beautiful ancient Chinese artifacts like statues, scrolls and bowls with intricate patterns. We learnt about some of the history of those artifacts and what they represent. We had to take detailed notes for a presentation in class later. We also got to wander around to look at the Japan and East Asia collection. It was a very fun day, and everyone had a good time while learning at the same time.
