STATEWIDE SCHOOLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS FOR 2021!

Sarah Shillabeer, Teacher

On Thursday 18 November the year 9 boys basketball team participated in the Statewide School Sports finals, and I am very pleased to report that they won the entire event! The boys are the Statewide Schools Basketball Champions for 2021!

The team, led by coach Ruben faced off against some serious competition. Our first game against Charles Campbell College was close, winning by one and proving to be a good warm up for the day. We lost our second game to Unity College. It was far from our best game, however with some reflection and focus on our defence, we came back to win the third game against Woodville High School, who were looking good, but not good enough to hold us down.

Thomas Moore College was next. This team was the only undefeated team for the day and hot favourites to win. We carried our momentum and tight defence into this game, with some excellent shooting, holding them out in a close game to win by only three points. With this victory, it came down to the last game against Nuriootpa High School. We still had a chance to play for the top position, but we needed a win. The final game of the minor rounds saw us pull together as a team and fight hard to win by six points.

We finished top and we were off to the big dance, and who should we face but Unity College, the only team to better us on the day. The boys went in with a positive attitude, knowing that if they continued their tough defence and sharp shooting, they were in with a chance. The game started, and was very close to begin. By half time, we had a handy lead.

In the second half, the boys found an extra gear and stormed home for an 11 point victory, claiming the Statewide Schools Basketball Championship for 2021.

This team, with Ruben’s encouragement has been training on and off since term one. They dedicated lots of lunch time to shooting practice and team continuity which has obviously paid off.
