HOME EC IS

GOING GREEN!

We have recently purchased compost caddies for each kitchenette in both of our kitchens for use by Food & Nutrition, Food & Hospitality and Child Studies students during their practicals.

Just like a home set up, students will be responsible for ensuring their food scraps go into the caddy and then make it into the large green bin, ready for the fortnightly collection. Term 4 has been a focus for training students to embed this in their practical cooking lessons- including remembering to re-line the bin for the next group of students!

Do you compost at home? All it requires is a caddy and compostable liners, provided at low or no charge by your local council. You can also purchase stylish caddies at Kmart, and compostable liners at all supermarkets. Don’t like the smell? Look into the Bokashi method offered by the City of Onkaparinga – countertop composting that you can put directly onto your garden instead of leaving food waste to linger in the green bin for a fortnight!

Either method is well worth the time and effort, with your food waste no longer going to landfill and instead being used to manufacture fertiliser, soil and mulch products.
