STCPSSA Year 5/6 Netball Football Round Robin

Last Friday the Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to represent the College at the STCPSSA Netball and Football Round Robin. Five Netball Teams and two Football teams battled it out at the Netball Centre and nearby New Town Oval, against teams from other Catholic Primary Schools.

Students involved showed great determination, teamwork and resilience. Many students were playing these sports for the first time, and relished the opportunity to try something new, in a supportive environment.

Netball Coach, Ash Nally, summed up the day with these wonderful words:

“What an amazing bunch of girls to work with! They were all willing to have a go, often out of their comfort zones trying new positions. I was so proud of their sportsmanship, not once did I hear a negative comment from any of them and they were the first to line up and congratulate the other teams every time. I personally loved watching their confidence grow each game, I was super proud!”

Thanks to Ash, all the staff involved with coaching, and the wonderful Year 9 students that assisted with teams and umpiring, including Addison Broadbent, Macy Balfour, Ava McLeod, Ruby Kaye, Sammy Lowe and Bronte Crane.

Badminton

A record five teams, across Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 participated in the Southern Tasmania High School Badminton Roster this term on a Friday afternoon. It was a wonderful roster that enabled students to try badminton for the first time, challenge themselves, socialise and have lots of fun. Students competed in teams or four or five, playing singles and doubles matches.

Well done to all players for representing the College so well. Special mention to Year 7 Gold who finished the roster in 3rd place, and Year 8 who finished in 4th place.

Thanks to parent coach/supervisors Brett Henderson, Hayley Stevens, Kerrieanne Taylor and Lynette Kay.

Primary Hockey

The Primary Hockey rosters drew to a close on Saturday. The students have done a fabulous job committing to the roster on a Saturday morning.  Well done particularly to the younger students who were trying hockey for the first time.

Thanks to all the families for their support with these teams, and particularly Kathryn Jakimowicz, Cassie Butler and students Sophie Halliday, Sophie Haremza, Sophia McNulty, Poppy Wilson, Ela Stedman-Sinnitt and Keshi K for their support with teams throughout the roster.

The Year 3 - 6 students have another opportunity to play school Hockey in Term 3 with afternoon rosters at the Hockey Centre on turf.

Secondary Netball

Well done to all our Netball teams, that concluded their rosters last week.  Congratulations to the Year 10 team who made it to the Grand Final in Division 2.  After a really close, nail biting first half, Sacred Heart were a bit too strong in the final quarters to take victory. The Mount Carmel team were gallant in defeat, and showed exceptional sportsmanship during the tense, competitive match.

The Year 9 Division 2 roster included a Top-4 final series, with the Mount Carmel team finishing the round matches in 3rd position, earning a place in the Semi Final against 2nd place team, Southern Christian College.  Mount Carmel were 5 goals behind for most of the game, before fighting back and  levelling the scores in the final two minutes. Not done, Southern Christian scored again to win the match 17-18.

It was wonderful to see so many students having a go at Netball this term.  Seven teams including three from Year 7, two from Year 8, a Year 9 and Year 10 team participated.  Teams generally included a mix of beginners and experience, with a focus on participation, inclusion, social connection and fun. The improvement in teamwork as the season progressed was outstanding. Special thanks to our Coaches and Managers; Georgina Roberts, Susan Thornton, Angela Barker, Hayley Stevens, Lucy Henderson, Simon James, Hannah Fleck, Melanie Butcher, Sarah Gray and Justin Bowman-Shaw. These teams are only possible with the support of parents/carers and family members.
