We want your Unwanted Children’s book!

As part of our Book Week celebrations in Term 3, we are excited to participate in the National Book Swap event to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The Foundation aims to invest in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, providing the tools and resources they request to shape the direction of their children's literacy future.

They achieve this by gifting new, culturally relevant books to these communities, fostering familiarity and engagement with books for children under five, and supporting communities in writing and illustrating their stories in their chosen languages.

Here's how the Great Book Swap works:

  1. We invite you to donate your unwanted children's books, which we will proudly display during Book Week.  Book donations can be dropped off to the Library from the start of Term 3.
  2. At a designated time during Book Week, students will visit the library which will be brimming with a wide array of books. For a gold coin donation, students can pick up a book of their choice.

In previous years, this event has been much loved by students and we're eagerly looking forward to its success in 2024. This year we are encouraging our secondary students to also participate in this event. All books that are donated to the Great Book Swap will not find a new home. All remaining books will be donated to Library Aid Abroad and Street libraries.

The Mount Carmel College community is assigned to the collective house of Yari, which means whale in Yari, an endangered language spoken on the coast south of Rubibi (Broome) in Western Australia.
