United Nations - Sustainability Goals

Throughout Terms 1 and 2, Year 9 students have been exploring the genre of installation art. They were given the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals to respond to and create their own sculptural installations.

“The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Countries have committed to prioritise progress for those who are furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls. The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society is necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context.”

In keeping with these goals, students were encouraged to use recycled materials wherever possible and use their creativity to convey a message about an issue they felt passionate about. The diversity in the materials they used and the depth of thought that went into their installations has been inspiring to witness. It is clear that the creativity and know how of these students will continue to be part of the solution to ‘end poverty, protect the planet and work for peace and prosperity’ now and in the future to help us all as a society achieve the bold ambitions of the Sustainable Development Goals. The exhibition is currently on display in the art room and the installations will be part of the Arts Festival in Term 3.
