Japanese News

To celebrate Languages Week, Japanese Curry was sold last Friday at Café 1847. We served both a chicken and vegetarian Japanese Curry "Taster Bowl" option to staff and students for a gold coin. We chose this Japanese dish as it's something that many students have never tried, it is easy to make and tastes delicious!! The feedback, and returning customers would attest to this!

We invite you to try making this at home with your daughter. Here is a photo of the Japanese curry mix that we used. You can purchase different levels of spice (Mild, Medium Hot, Hot and Extra Hot) from your local Coles or Woolworths.

Here is the recipe and an instructional video to assist you.

We would love to hear your feedback and a happy snap of you making it at home.

Japanese Calligraphy - School Holiday Activity

The Sakura Japanese Culture Centre is running a school holiday workshop where participants aged 7-12 years will experience a rich blend of Japanese culture and discover a love for the arts and crafts of Japan.

It will be held on Monday 15 July from 10:30am - 1:00pm in Hobart City and run by Japanese calligraphy instructor, Maiko Howell.

In the workshop participants will be able to choose from three sets of Japanese written characters; Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji. They also will learn how to shape Nerikiri (Japanese confectionery) and play some Japanese craft games such as Origami, Ayatori (cat's cradle), Kamifusen (paper balloon), use chopsticks to catch some toy eggs, chocolate and lollies.

Maiko was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and began doing calligraphy at age 5 under the guidance of her mother - also a calligrapher. Maiko became a master of Japanese traditional calligraphy in 2017 and has held workshops for children and adults throughout Eastern Japan, and now lives in Tasmania with her family.
