DanceLife Unite

On Friday 31st May, a number of our Mount Carmel girls competed in the DanceLife Unite competition at GYC’s Don Bosco Theatre. The first group to perform was the Senior Dance Troupe with a lyrical piece choreographed by Ms Marsden. The piece was really beautiful and, considering it was the first time they had performed as an ensemble, the girls did a wonderful job. We were lucky enough to achieve second place for this routine - a result we were thrilled with! Next stop is the Southern Tasmania Dance Eisteddfod in July. With one performance under our belts, we are really pumped to make our next performance even better!

The second group to perform was the 9/10 Dance class. This is an elective class and students have been learning some awesome hip hop choreography from local dancer, Johan Manurung (check out his Instagram page).  Johan came into the College and ran a number of sessions with the class and then the girls have been rehearsing and preparing for their big moment on the stage. We placed second again, only 0.5 of a point behind first place! The adjudicator said our girls had wonderful energy and great unison - we were over the moon with this feedback!

A number of other Mount Carmel girls competed in this competition for their dance studios - congratulations to all involved. A huge thanks to all the parents who supported the performers as without you these events can’t happen!  We ❤️ Dance!

Sustainability Collaboration

Tullia Chung-Tilley from the Sustainable Learning Centre has been working with our Year 9/10 Dance class and the Environmental Leaders to create a social justice dance film that promotes climate action. This collaboration is a first of its kind here in Hobart.

The students have participated in a number of choreographic workshops and are looking forward to filming next term in a location that showcases both Mount Carmel and our local community.

They have been challenged through the experience so far and are having to think quite deeply about how to create a dance that delivers a clear message.

Keep an eye out for this amazing collaboration that encourages us to think about how we take care of our environment.
