Physical Sciences
It’s been an exciting and busy start to Term 2 in Science! Students across the school have been thinking, questioning, experimenting, and getting hands on as they explore how the world around them works. From building and testing ideas to designing creative solutions, our young scientists have been developing their curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills every week.
Here’s a glimpse into what each year level has been discovering:
Prep
Our Prep students have been exploring how things move! Through play and hands-on investigations, they’ve been testing how different objects roll, slide, and spin. They’ve been asking big questions like, “Why does this go faster?” and “Why doesn’t this move at all?” As they experiment with different shapes, sizes, and materials, they’re beginning to understand what makes movement change...and having lots of fun along the way!
Level 1
Level 1 students have been making some noise, in the best way possible! They’ve been exploring how sound is created through vibrations and experimenting with different ways to change pitch and volume. From tapping and shaking to blowing and plucking, students have been discovering how sound works. Soon, they’ll be putting their learning into action by designing and building their very own musical instruments!
Level 2
In Level 2, it’s all about pushes and pulls! Students have been investigating how forces can make objects move, stop, speed up, or change shape. They’ve been testing their ideas through experiments and using arrows and diagrams to show direction. It’s been fantastic to see students explain their thinking and then apply it in a creative design challenges where they build and improve their ideas.
Level 3
Level 3 students have been heating things up as they explore heat and how it transfers! They’ve been investigating different heat sources and discovering how heat moves through conduction and convection. Through hands-on experiments, students have been testing which materials keep heat in (insulators) and which let it pass through (conductors). They’re now using this knowledge in a practical design challenge, thinking like real scientists and engineers.
Level 4
Level 4 students have been diving into forces and motion, exploring how and why things move the way they do. They’ve been identifying different types of forces and testing their effects through engaging investigations. Their learning is building towards their exciting “forces car course,” where they’ll design and test their own solutions to control movement. Watch this space!
Level 5
Level 5 students have been exploring the wonders of light! They’ve been investigating how light travels, how shadows are formed, and how light interacts with different materials. Through creative and hands-on activities, students are experimenting with reflection, absorption, and refraction. All of their learning will come together in a Shadow Puppet Play, where science and creativity collide in a fantastic performance.
Level 6
Our Year 6 students have been powering up with their learning about electricity! They’ve been exploring how energy is used to generate electricity and how circuits work. Through building, testing, and improving their own circuit designs, students are developing strong problem-solving skills and thinking like real engineers. Their final projects will showcase their ability to design, troubleshoot, and refine working electrical systems.
Across all year levels, it’s been wonderful to see students thinking like scientists. They have been asking questions, testing ideas, learning from mistakes, and sharing their discoveries. We’re excited to see where their learning takes them next!
