Level Five

Level 5 students have returned from the Term 1 holidays refreshed, positive and ready for a fantastic Term 2. Teachers have been very impressed with how quickly students settled back into classroom routines and learning. It has been wonderful to see students showing enthusiasm, resilience and a strong commitment to their learning across all subjects.
Writing
This term in Writing, students have been creating historical biographies on influential Australians from the 1800s to connect with our Theme unit. Students have researched important figures from Australian history and learnt how to structure biographies using their own notes to write introductions, chronological paragraphs and conclusions.
A very exciting part of this unit has been publishing our biographies using Google Sites. Students have loved combining their ICT skills with their writing by creating websites to showcase their amazing work. We are incredibly proud of the creativity, effort and presentation students have demonstrated throughout this project.

Reading
This term we have been reading Black Cockatoo and its sequel Dirrarn. These novels have helped students explore and understand different perspectives and experiences of First Nations Australians.
Our Reading focus this term has been Monitoring and Questioning. Monitoring is when students stop and think about whether what they are reading makes sense, identifying confusing parts and using strategies to help improve understanding. Questioning encourages students to ask questions before, during and after reading to deepen comprehension and think more critically about the text. These strategies have helped students become more active and thoughtful readers.

Maths
So far this term, students have been learning about fractions. We have explored equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, and representing fractions in different ways. Students have enjoyed using hands-on materials and visual models to strengthen their understanding.
We have also recently completed a unit on shapes. During this unit, students investigated the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and explored how 3D objects can be represented as nets. To finish the unit, students worked collaboratively to design and create nets of classroom items, which was both challenging and enjoyable.
